MGO standalone coming to Japan; expansion to follow

Konami as announced that they will be releasing a Blu-ray Metal Gear Online: Starter Pack standalone disc come July 17. This will be available in Japan only and is set to retail for 1800 yen. Though it seems unlikely and odd that gamers would choose to purchase this item without picking up Metal Gear Solid 4 itself, it is at least releasing at a small price.

Added onto the announcement of the standalone addition, Konami is also setting up the first online expansion pack which is expected sometime in late July, if not, early August.

There has been no information as to when or if we can expect these two additions to come stateside or across the pond; however, we'll be sure to keep you guys informed once it is announced.

Is MGO worth it? I loved the game but how does it stack up to COD4 online?

This is very odd, actually. MGO just wouldn't make sense without MGS4.

Anyway, to answer your question, Trojans24601, MGO itself is much, much better than COD4's online. Of course, I'm talking about all the connection problems with COD4, the host ended game problem, and getting thrown in to random games that are only one kill away from ending.
MGO has none of these problems. The only problem would lie with the gameplay. Some people fail to understand how this type of gameplay works online with other people. You would definitely have to try it for yourself to see if you like MGO, but I would recommend it. It's pretty difficult to be successful in MGO, also, so if you don't like learning how to play the game strategically then this is not a game for you.

MGO is fun, but sometimes I do okay and other times I do horribly.  I just can't seem to kill anybody.  I shoot at them, but they don't die.  The other players seem to headshot me all the time.  Maybe it's the autoaim, but I tried that and couldn't get it to do squat.  I also can't host a server, which sucks.  I hope they do release some new maps for it though.  I do a lot better at COD4, but I really wouldn't compare this to a FPS like COD4, since it's not exactly a FPS.

Is this the same mgo that comes with mgs4 or is like an full blown game on itself?

actually considering the state of the U.S. dollar right now it's closer to 20 bucks.

They should just release it as a PSN download save their blurays for bigger games. unless this comes with more than just the game. But considering the Konami ID system they clearly arent fully trusting of the PSN store system and probably wouldnt want to sell it as a download. The add-ons probably wont be on the store either.

Also I'd have to assume everyone would be able to receive this download. I mean arnt all the servers in japan?they might as well patch them all simultaneously for the content. and then go a head and sell it to anyone who ejoys playing the game since they're not doing much else to keep people intersted in the thing (I'm looking at you "constant host drops" and "respawn deaths")

@Alpha I agree, I also hate the constant change of rules like I choose team deathmach and I end up playing a free for all game. Also they should include more maps on the playlists in ranked matches, Im tired of seeing bloodbath over and over and over again.

MGO  delivers a unique 3rd person shooter experience which is based around tactics and strategy. No cover fire system (pop and shot) and no run and gun. I love MGO!!

mgo isnt even that good it fails to incorporate was mgs is all about which is stealth plus it all about the money with mgo i mean you get charged for a second character or to customise your character further then you have to pay out for furthers map and game modes ill stick with gtaiv or team fort 2 for my online play thnx

I hope they scrap the MGO Shop thing. Why can't they have them released on the PS Store? I want to buy the Pre-set Mesegges thing, but seeing as I don't have a credit card, and my Dad doesn't want to buy something from the Internet. Sucks...

@BloodWarg No your are wrong, it gives you all the materials to be stealthy, its how you play the game. im actually best in the stealth, my headshots arent the best yet and so i use stealth, ive actually been walked on by the other team and they never knew i as right infront of them, till on midtown mealstrom, when 2 guys where checkin the area, iwas playing dead right in front of a fruit stand, they were both checin the ally's and i slowing go from laying to crouching position and BOOM BOOM Headshots to both and i as 3 ft away from them, MGO IS a stealth game and even more so if your team can do the same and you work in unison, this game is both VERY team oriented and stealth or run-n-gun, its how YOU want to play as for the way this game goes about it im kind of dissapointed that they are still making us use the K-ID's and crap, and the way we have to buy things is crap and a slower process, but ill endure if for the love of both Offline and Online of this game

Well, i downloaded the beta, but the updates wouldnt work.

So, for people like me, who dont want to pay all that money on the whole game, MGO only would be good, like (and similarly priced to, if my maths is correct) Warhawk, being completely online. Hope this comes to Britain, and im saying no to the Store idea, as I have like 7 gigs left from a 60gig console, so im waiting for Home to take up quite a bit of that space, although I have quite a few months to clear it.
As I say, I hope it coes to Britain.
