iSuppli expects another PS3 price cut

iSuppli analyst Pamela Tufegdzic has said that the company expects Sony to lower the price of its PlayStation 3 console at some point this year, suggesting that consumers will likely make the transition from the Wii to PS3 during the Christmas period.

"We anticipate Sony will have another price slash on the PS3 this year, and come Christmas, consumers who originally bought the Wii will likely purchase the PS3”, commented Tufegdzic, during an interview with Reuters.

Tufegdzic’s comments echo previous statements made by the company earlier last month, where it predicted that Sony’s next-generation console would enjoy strong sales throughout 2008, anticipating sales of up to 10 million units.

"2008 will be a turning year for the PS3 - Sony is offering a better forthcoming software pipeline with blockbuster titles like Gran Turismo 5, which will boost PS3 sales this year,” added Tufegdzic.

Among the list of highly anticipated PS3 exclusives this year include Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Evolution Studios’ MotorStorm 2 and Sony’s own LittleBigPlanet.

If cutting the price means attracting a lot more users which means developers should start supporting PS3 first instead of last - then I suppose its a good thing.

It doesn't seem logical. As Blu-Ray has won (or is atleast in the upper hand) this wouldn't be smart for a business. They know the PS3 will sell now due to the end of the HD-format war, cause people want a cheap player and the PS3 fits into that category.

dude if they cut the price that and having all of the great features and games theres no doubt in my mind that it could surpass the wii

I think the Blu-ray sales boost really has yet to explode (though sales have kicked up big time).  People are waiting for the $300 player (especially the former HD-DVD owner).  I am also looking at the prospect of the 2nd PS3 for my household.  We've come to depend on a lot of it's extra features (along with the PSP's too...can we get internet radio for the PS3 as well?).

Consoles are always sold on the razor principle, i.e. you sell the initial product cheap, either at cost or at a loss to get the punters through the door and then sting 'em with razor blade sales. It makes sense for Sony to lower the price of there product as much as they can because their business model is based on making money out of software sales. The more consoles in people homes the more customers they have for the software. Its a no brainer. They've reduced the costs of a number of fairly important components recently including the Cell going to 45nm fabrication, RSX going to 65nm fabrication and of course the cost reduction in producing the blue laser diode required for Blu-Ray drives. It'd be a smart move to do this mid year just after the MGS4 sales spike to keep brand momentum going into the Autum/winter period and the primary gift giving window (That's Christmas to none marketing people)

@ bigd0g - Your not cool becuase you posted first. Nor does anyone think you are.

    @ Deusthousand - LOL

I think a $100 price cut will come sometime in 08, no doubt about that. I have a 60 gig model and would love to pick up a 40 gig model just to play PS3 games and blu-rays. I want to keep my 60 gig model safe for when I want to play PS2 games in HD. I worry about what if something happens to my 60 and I can no longer get a system with the Emotion chip which plays all my PS2 games perfectly in HD. The 80 gig uses software emulation, and Im assuming any new hi end SKUs will also.

wow. it's looking like a good year for the ps3. mgs4 is coming out and GTAIV is also. these are the two games that i really can't wait for and GT5. next year after this price cut, it looks like it iwll be almost down to the ps2 launch price 200 bucks. but, doubt it will go that low.

    • 12:05pm GMT - March 3rd, 2008

I really doubt Sony will make anither hundred bucks cut. They will first cut just $50 an add the DS3 with it. It because they know it is selling very well at the current price and also because besides GoW2 on X360 theres no oder competiton. Blu Ray players still over $400 so they dont need it yet. Hope they make but wont wait for that atleast till november

    • 12:48pm GMT - March 3rd, 2008

I had expected that Sony would drop the price on the PS3 sometime this year as well. It will probably drop around Black Friday. I really don't think that a full $100 dollar price cut is coming... I'm thinking at least a $50 dollar price drop on both PS3 models. The 40GB PS3 at $299 would be way too cheap... it shouldn't drop that low until sometime in 2009.

  19. Stickemup

    • 1:00pm GMT - March 3rd, 2008

Those predictions mean nothing, all of us could have come up with that conclusion. They might drop it by $50 before X-mas OR they might be forced to drop the price if M$ does it after they release their big guns. Come on guys, if Gears of War 2 is gonna be WAY better then the original, we are in for a struggle. No matter how good MGS4 is. So if M$ cuts prices then Sony is gonna have to do the same. Home, LBP, Killzone 2 and MGS4 all have to be GREAT or else they are all gonna be failures. If home woulda came out last year then not so much, it could have been just "alright" from the beginning, but NOW it really has to be better then XBL.

www.YourPS34free.com/index.php?ref=4755645 This link will guide you through the EASY process of getting a brand new retail Playstation 3! Here is how it works! First and foremost this is NOT like those other offers you see all over the web, where you are required to sign up for a million "free" offers that end up taking forever and costing you a bunch of money and a headache. You click this link and sign up for their referral program. That’s it! Once you sign up for your ONE required offer you use the link they provide you and post it on forums, or send it to friends, and if someone uses that link to sign up and complete one offer of their own, you get a referral. Here is the cost breakdown of the referral system. 8 Referrals = New retail 40gb PS3 10 Referrals = New retail 60gb PS3 12 Referrals = New retail 80gb PS3 and ONE game of your choice 14 Referrals = New retail 80gb Ps3 and two games YOU CHOSE (includes new releases like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune or Ratchet and Clank Future etc…) Plus many more PS3 offers and others including up to $475 in CASH I have been a member for 3 days and have 10 completed referrals on my account, well on my way to my chosen 14 (Already enough for a 60gb or 40gb PS3). I also have 250 people, who have signed up; if any 4 of them complete an offer I have my Ps3 and two games. It can take up to 3 days for a completed offer to process, so I may have already reached my goal. The company even covers shipping and handling so there is no hidden costs of ANY KIND. This website even has you create an account so you can track your progress the entire way through, and once your package ships, they supply a UPS tracking link. It is extremely user friendly I recommend you research this company online, as they are proven legitimate and not in any way a scam. EGM magazine actually did a story on them 2 years ago to see if they were legit and did in fact get a free system, so they proved it worked! The way it is possible is these sponsor's pay this company money for referring people to them, and using a portion of that money, buy you a PS3 as an incentive for helping them advertise. It is a pretty nice scheme, but it results in me getting something for free so I don't care. This will be my third free thing to get from this company; I have a 360 elite and iPhone for the cost of about 5 dollars. Enjoy your free system, free isn't a bad deal for a great console and a Blu-Ray player! www.YourPS34free.com/index.php?ref=4755645

I am sure Sony will have another price cut by Christmas. Sony is riding a successful year with the win of the format war and a price drop would be the icing on this already sweet cake.

more like special bundles then a price cut. >_> Besides seeing is believing right? Wait at your own discretion, analysts are always going to predict this sort of thing even if it seems highly unlikely.

i think its ok like its now but i don't really think it will be a BIG discount i think 4 the 40gb a $349 or even a $299 but 349 is more likely to be expected the 80 gb can be a $100 discount = $400

I really hope Sony drops the price again because this dildo wasn't shoved far enough up my ***.  Hope you bring out a 320GB PS3 for $499 Sony.  I wasn't ****ed over enough paying $600 for my 60GB and drop the price a few months later for a bigger model.  You'd have a he!! of a time without early adopters.  How about you throw us a ****in' bone here?  Maybe a DS3?  Too hopeful...

    ---

I don't want anyone to think I'm mad paying for the 60GB.  I love it.  The BC is awesome.  I'm just angry that a larger model came out $100 cheaper only a few months after launch.  What did we get for buying a console with 1 title at launch? NOTHING.  Only true fans are going to pay $500-600 for a console with 1 decent title at launch. And we got boned. Hard.
