Transformers not enough to repel Blu-ray sales

Posted on October 29th, 2007 at 08:13 EDT

When it came to one of the most anticipated titles of the year, Transformers was the first thing that popped into people’s minds.

However, when it came to the choice of format, the title was announced as an exclusive to the HD DVD medium (as well as DVD). Many analysts speculated that this could potentially spike new life into the HD DVD format and finally give it some respect and attention in the market. However, recent sales figures prove otherwise.

In spite of selling 1150,000 copies, Transformers on HD DVD did not sell well enough to thwart Blu-ray sales away. By winning another week in software sales by selling 51% of total unit sales, Blu-ray has yet to lose a week to the HD DVD format this year.

This only goes on to confirm further which format the consumers prefer - Blu-ray.

That's pretty sweet! But kind of figured that was going to happen, blu-ray is too strong now, HD-dvd can not win, it is it's destiny.

Just end the dang war already. The more it's prolonged, the more people will get pissed off. I don't see the point in HD DVD fighting back when they're losing. Give up already.

What if hd-dvd were lacking because they are going into experimentation mode to where they can catch up with blu ray its like no company feels sorry for it , since hd-dvd how it struggled to fit the full hd audio on the transformer movie disc.

So i honestly think hd-dvd may go into that mode where they would come out with bigger storage capacity but itll not dent or bother blu ray much because of how blu ray is more of a greater quality format.

This was to be expected. HD-DVD is dying and it's only a matter of time.

Transformers being an HD-DVD exclusive is pretty much like buying alcohol free beer, you get a similar taste but the experience is flat.

I do agree that they just need to cancel the whole production of HD-DVD and end the "War". I understand they have so much invested and it sucks for them that its failing. But think of the consumer. If they keep spitting out what they can the people supporting HD-DVD are going to keep buying a bunch of dvds that will eventually be obsolete and no longer be in production. So a HD-DVD player and HD-DVDs. If they want anymore High Def movies they will have to go invest in another player that plays BR-DVDs. They can get one of those BR-HD-DVD players that plays them both but the old HD-DVD player turns out to be a waste of money. I knew BR would dominate. When you have a BR DVD that has the potential in the near future to hold 4 to 5 times more then what a HD-DVD can......HMMM i think its obvious whos going to win. Its like saying im going to settle for a 50 GB hard drive when you can get a Tera B. Thats if you have the money for it. You all know what im getting at. I dont need to say anymore. Im just sorry for the consumers who paid all this money for HD-DVD products and now they are going to have to bite the bullet and take the losses. Sorry guys. Blue Ray is the future for all Media. Movie/Music/ and of course Games. Take care and God Bless.

@Nosferatu:
They already did announce a 3-layer disc with more capacity than blu-ray; sorry, but your speculation is old news... btw. blu-ray announced an ever bigger capacity disc :)

@Nosferatu

I haven't checked so I can only presume that Transformers is on a single layer hd-dvd so to fit more on the disc they would've needed to opt for the dual-layer hd-dvd, as hd-dvd is more expensive to produce by the GB, this would have made Transformers cost more to manufacture. It might not be much more for each disc but the cost adds up into the millions.

@TheRiseofWar.

You just made me think of something. What exactly would happen if Toshiba came out today and raised the white flag, announced that there will be no more hd-dvd movies to come and all sales of hd-dvd players stopped? To all those consumers who invested (if you will) in hd-dvd and have a few movies in their collection, how will they react? Will many sue? Wil Toshiba be forced to pay for compensation to all those early adopters? I don't think Toshiba can sell hd-dvd products to the public for like over a year then say 'go screw yourselfs' this is probably the only reason why hd-dvd stick around. Toshiba will continue to fight because it will prolong hd-dvd existence and when it does die later on, at least they can say they tried and didn't give up.

Maybe, only way is to sell HD-DVD players for a price of $79.99 and movies for $7.99.

Or buy one (1) get (2) two free, yeah!

I can't wait until Spiderman 3 comes out. That will be tomorrow. Three was not my favorite one but two was so I have to buy the three pack to get two. I bring this up because I can see this movie selling well on BR.

Wait for the Spidey 3 spike for the blu-ray side.  I've seen considerable more presence in retail ads and on TV commercials for Blu-ray products.  That should help speed things up a bit.

@mikeghtmare

yea the triple layered HD-dvd may have beat BR, but by what 1 measly gig. it needed to triple to get past a dual layer. then to beat the new 100gig four layer BR, HD-dvd needs to put out a 6layer which would make no sense and sounds stupid. Toshiba should just give up,BR offers more room for higer quality  and cheaper than their HD-dvd. it's like $5-8 more for a HD-dvd coounter part to a BR movie. now here's a question. How much would Dreamworks have made if they kepted the movie on Blu-Ray? Also i know that Steven Spielberg was protected from that whole deal and him being and executive producer, shouldn't that have saved the movie and allowed it on BR or does he hafta be the director for the movie?

This news isnt to shocking......the smart thing for paramount to do was to put it out on both formats they would have made way more money....I had planned to get it on blu-ray, but now im getting it on dvd....oh well...

Transformers sucked. I personally don't know anyone who liked it. Maybe young kids. I would rent it for the visual splendor, but never buy it. But 1,000,000 sales is impressive indeed.

I love Transformers The Movie but i refuse to buy this movie until it comes out on Blu Ray.  Even though i can buy it on DVD, i am not going to give any of my money to that movie studio because they sold out to HD DVD.

have you heard that sony is going to sue paramount for breach of contract by not puttin Transformers out on blu-ray.  Sony lived up to their end and kept the trailer available on the PSN store.  Same goes for blades of glory and probably Iron Man when that drops next year.
