Welcome to the world of fashion...well, at least the virtual world of fashion. Earlier this week during the Sony keynote at TGS, Kaz Hirai made a comment regarding downloadable content for Home that could make things really fashionable. “Dress” is going to be an expansion to the PlayStation Home service that will connect real life and virtual world fashion, and it will be a "premium avatar service".
The idea that created Dress is really interesting as it came from the game Tourist Trophy. In Tourist Trophy, gamers were allowed to dress up their bikers in real life clothing brands/gear. Dress will provide the same theme, but of course with much extension. It will be a unique avatar system separate from the default Home avatars. With Dress, you’ll be able to make precise detail customizations to hair style, facial features and body.
Takamasa Shickhisawa, director of Tourist Trophy explained four distinct areas of Dress within the Home realm:
Dress Town will be an area where gamers can enjoy the world of fashion. It is designed to be a virtual mall with clothing shops. Players will enter these stores based on real life clothing brands to make players feel as if they are really out and about shopping for their favorite brands. American Eagle, GAP, Armani, or Express – the possibilities are just limitless.
Dress Studio is the design portion where players will actually be able to create their own brands and designs. With the backing by Sony, players will also be able to send off their creations to real life fashion designers in hopes of their creations becoming real life products.
Dress Museum is a place where players can view the history of fashion. There will be many interactive factors where the players can view famous scenes from movies and famous characters to learn about fashion as well as create ideas for their own designs to take back to Dress Studio.
Dress Park is the community area where players can exchange gifts including clothing. You'll be able to create and participate in fashion shows based off the brands made in Studio.
Dress is expected to become available for download in early 2008, which is also when Home is scheduled to be rolling out.

1FAM R6V
Home is going to be huge
hhmmm. Dress Studio. I LOVE That idea. I don't care what others say.
am I the only one who w about this monnths before everyone else?
big woop, this is old news knew this 5 months ago. I hope www.cin2.com is in there.
psn id: gingo... sounds decent but i dont want to have to pay al ot just to get some new clothes for my avatar
sony always make new innovations.
Sony is doin' it real B.I. and this new feature is wonderful for us gamers because fashion freaks will spend real dough to provide more free features such as free MMO's etc. So don't knock it and you don't have to download it as it will be in exansion pack form. Also the great idea I like is the fact that sony will break bread to help back your design co., this is what the psn is supposed to be about connecting & expanding...
@DeadOnArrival06: Sony can do more then one ptoject at a time, they're talented, Home will be the next big thing, so roll with them, or get the f**k out of the way...
Take it easy, Game. Holy Sh!t can't someone post their opinion on this site without getting stomped on?! F* ck. Sony needs to focus on pushing out their games at the best quality possible if their planning on overtaking the competition, not sitting around playing let's dress the avatar!
wow! Sony said ps3 is not just a gaming system from the beginning dont you fokers listen
sounds like Sony is trying to attract more girls & homosexuals
HAHAHAHA.....Now it looks like you'll be the next target for that remark. HAHA.!
lol INC= I need cok!
Didn't second life had a similar system?
Wonder if Aqua and Afrika are going to tie in to Home.
i have a feeling gap and american eagle and brand names they may try to sue sony if they cannot get any sum of the money sony will be making off of it. I dunno how all that works but thats interesting.
Nothing new, this stuff's been in games for years.
If you don't believe me look up a game called SecondLife.
Please stop posting retarded remarks.
Ha. Just as I predicted on Sept. 11. www.psu.com/Rumor--Sony-to-play-Dress-up--a0001275-p0.php
Anyway, I like the idea of creating my own clothing, because I doubt I'll like any of the s**t put up there. I'm just curious as to how many gamers actually wear Abercrombie or those other conformist clothing lines. I can't see any self-respecting gamer sitting down for hours gaming with 3 Easter-colored shirts and preripped, prefaded jeans.
@Nosferatu: I'm sure AE (American Eagle), GAP (G** and Proud), and other companies will have to pay a royalty to put their stuff up on there. I'm sure if you shop in a particular store, they will get the money. I'm sure Sony knows to cover their a**es by now with all those lawsuits in the past year.
P.S. I hate this f***in' censoring.
I had a feeling the PS3 was gay, but this removes all doubt.
the more content the better, im not complaining, it will open home up to bigger audiences, including girls.
Girls play video games? o,o. j/k of course they do. just not alot of them.
This would certinaly help inspire more girls to play the PS3, as if Home itself wasnt enough of course. It factors into a lot of customization desires too. I just hope the interface is quick and easy to use or people will tire of it quickly even if they wanted to use it to begin with. "Second Life" has a similar set up as does "There". In "There" there was an in game ecconomy that was based on making custom clothes and vehicles, they gave you software to construct the stuff but it wore me out because it too so long to make and the money they were asking to buy the base blueprints to build on was too much.
My avatar will be a nudist !! i will boycot the mall and focus on gaming !! :)
this is pointless crap in my opinion.
Armani has my name all over this! hehe
Damn i get annoyed with you guys that get annoyed by this. You know that Sony is not one person working on one thing at the time? Well that's the case. It's not like they all focused on 'Dress' to get it finnished before Firmware 2.0. They are working on things paralelly. Stupid americans. No offense to you smart americans. I know there are smart ones too. :D
thats tight home is getting to be very big!
I just can't wait to get a virtual lap dance and particiapate in a virtual drinking game! Home is going to be so cool!!!! Take that Xbox Live, you boring S.O.B.s! While they're messing around with text messaging, I'll be getting me some virtual nookie while sporting American Eagle!!!
Come on guys, why does this have to be "gay". It isn't like Sony is focusing all of their attention on "Dress", its just another avenue for Home. Don't like it, don't download it.
cool thing to do outside of gameing
I hate the fashion industry but if there are fashion freaks who'll spend money on pretend clothing just because of a tag and they keep HOME running, then its OK with me.
Well said, LJwinter.
While the idea is more Barbie than (Street Fighter) Ken the idea has a lot of potential to get more attention to those non-gaming companies Phil talked about when first introducing the concept of Home.
It could also give the PS3 more media attention by combining Dress with shows like Heidi Klum's Project Runway (my wife watches so subsequently I have to watch). This and a game like SingStar will also have great marketing properties for tie-ins with American Idol. Imagine contests from Home where people can submit videos of them singing songs that the contestants sang the week before. Then winning real world prizes like cash, cars, or a free trip to the finale.
Anything's possible. While Dress doesn't get my juices pumping to become a virtual Tommy Hilfiger it does have the potential to bring the casual gamer onto the PS3. It seems to be working for Nintendo.
Sheesh...why is everyone so up in arms about all this?
Look at it this way...if you have an xbox you have to pay M$ for new avatar images...you usually get 4 or 5 in a pack for something like 100 to 150 M$ points...that translates at about 85p - £1.27 roughly...
Now this is clearly a fairly good business model because it works...people pay £40 a year for the "privelage" of playing games against their mates and then continue to pay more for new themes and gamer pictures... However Sony are already giving us free online multiplayer, free access to Home and giving you the OPTION to buy further upgrades and more bits to it...if you buy bankshot billiards on the Xbox Live it'll cost you 800 M$ points (about £6.80) for EVERY person that wants to play. Now ,would you be willing to pay that same price for a pool table to put in your Home space to allow you and ALL your mates to play pool? a one off price gives the same enjoyment but means that your mates can then buy a different game, an air hockey table, an arcade machine and so forth so everyone can play without losing a fortune.
When it all comes down to the bare bones, Sony already give us a lot of free content and access so I'm more than happy to fork out a little bit for some funky clothes for my avatar and to make my Home space habitable...if anything it's a bit of a thank you towards Sony for giving so much to us already...
Those idiots who keep saying "I want good games!" you seem ignorant of the fact that SONY DOES NOT MAKE GAMES.
Sony does own a couple child companys, like SOE that develops and publishes games, but they do so independantly of Sony. They are not paid by nor managed by Sony.
So get over it.
playstation why are you losing use down it semes like its all the time now we just carnt truset your relese dates any more wich i think is bad for a company your size
gay
finally i have something to do with my PS3 between watching oprah and getting a manicure!!!!
@JD-82
Totally agree dude, totally agree!
53rd post!!
Atreides, You seem to be the Ignorant one, my friend. Sony indeed MAKES games. GO and look at the box art for any God of War game. Created, Developed, and Published by SONY Computer Entertainment of America, INC....
DeadOnArrival Sony IS NOT SCEA, they are separate companies.
