Square's Takai-san prefers developing on Xbox 360

Speaking in the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine UK, Last Remnant director Hiroshi Takai has said that he hopes his next project with Square Enix will be on the Xbox 360 as it's easier to develop for than PlayStation 3.

"It's been the team's first time working with Xbox 360 and the Unreal Engine," Takai said. "In both cases the experience has been a positive one. In fact, as we've only just finished work on Last Remnant I don't even know what my next project is going to be at Square Enix. However, I'm very much hoping it'll be for Xbox 360 as it's been a lot easier to work with than PlayStation 3."

Our concern with this statement is that the Last Remnant was built using the Unreal Engine, and, looking at the history of Unreal Engine titles that have appeared on the PS3 and the technical issues that follow, you have to wonder whether it’s the console or perhaps the development tools.

The following list is but a few PS3 titles utilizing the Unreal Engine that have either suffered delays or canceled outright; Blacksite: Area 51, Stranglehold, The Last Remnant, Turok, Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon, Frontlines: Fuel of War.

    Look at the trend of games that use the URE on the ps3 none of them turn out that great. With proof from other games that use there own engine that games can look just as beautiful i hope more devs take the making there own engine route.

     The unreal engine is great. It looks really good, and runs efficiantly(well, on the pc and 360 anyways). It's a shame that many developers are just deciding to stop developing on it all together. It's upsetting, but at the end of the day development studios are a business, and their main goal is making profit. I guess they must feel it's not worth the investment in time or money?  @2 if you had any idea how expensive and time consuming it is to create a game engine, you would understand why a large majority(upwards of 75%) of the titles being released are run off licensed game engines.

    If the 360 was so much better how come your game still ended up being crap? Maybe you just suck at game development. Naughty Dog don't seem to have any problems making a GREAT game, maybe Hiroshi Takai should take lessons from them?

    well since he loves it so much they should put his team in charge of making ff13 for the 360. while it may not be the system i am going to play the game on i do want SE to make the best games possible.

    tehn again last remnant has alot of problems, but they are probably better at dealing with UE by now.

    Lol... you guys forgot to mention REAL titles that use Unreal Engine and turn out to be VERY good on PS3... let's just say one of them: BIOSHOCK.

    I'm not really worried about it, The Last Remnant s*cks anyway. Furthermore, Takai's opinion is useless. Does anybody remember any decent tittle he was involved? No? Anybody? Oh, that's just because there ISN'T. Watch it...

    If development wasn' an issue why is the game still crap? With a title that averages 65 on the meta, you can take the unreal engine and continue to step on squares good name by making these abominations.

    Enough of this nonsense already that the PS3 is harder to develop for than the 360. Look at MGS4, Uncharted, Resistance 2, Valkyria Chronicles and even Burnout Paradise (the PS3 was used as the lead development console). How come these developers can develop for the PS3 in a quality that no one ever did for any console? I think those other developers should just learn how to work......

    Well, it's not hard to understand why he thinks this. Using the unreal engine to develop games will always turn out better on 360. However, last remnant on 360 isnt exactly perfect, from what ive seen and heard its fulls of alot of technical issues.

    i believe he is too scared to learn how to harness it.  look at all the other developers who are developing for the PS3.  they had a learning curve, too.  why is he so different?  Xbox may be easy to develop for,  but it's only because they don't care what the game is or the quality of the game.  they just want something on it for people to buy.  not for PS3.  PS3 demands high quality.  i do anyway.  we have the best quality games in my opinion.  and more will come.

    Justin Pinter conveniently skips some critical information like how The Last Remnant runs like a piece of crap, like infact many Unreal Engine III games on the Xbox 360 including Lost Oddysey. The problem here is an untalented team using a game engine known to produce unpolished results. No anti-aliasing, late visible texture load-in, constant choppy framerate, samey looking textures, low-poly models. Heck, read some Last Remnant reviews.

    I feel that developing 4 the ps3 is like good honest hard work & proud of the final result. Think of it as constructing a meccano set. Now the 360 is more like playing with duplo ( remember the simple blocks that stick together anyone)

     Hes just a Microsoft new DOG, but his out of lucky cause we all know that is just lazy and unprofessional... and good games will come with top quality for the PS3 and we will see who are the great developers not to mention the the old schools like Mr. Kojima who already show how to develop on the PS3...

    hey lazy b4st4rd..go to insomniac and naughty dog(and other)for some quick lessons on how to use the PS3 hardware..did they complaint about how hard is to make games on PS3??NO.....WHY??cuz they r hard workin honest people who never choose the easiest and crapiest way to develop for some basic results..PS3 its the future of gaming..put that $hit in ur brainless heads lazy developers!!!!

     I thought Unreal Tournament was pretty good when it was released at the time.  But it would be nice to see more new engines being developed on the ps3 like LBP.

    Well he is right you know... he is not saying that the PS3 is a bad machine or anything else.. he is just saying that it is more easy to develop on the 360.. and that is true. The sole reason for this is that you don't have to optimize your memory.. which end the end makes it more simple to develop for the 360.

    Clearly if Unreal game are troublesome on the PS3 that means it's the development tools that need to change to accomodate it. The System isnt going to change but you can fix the software. If they havent dont it yet that simply means they dont want people using it on PS3 and it should be avoided as a middle ware solution.

    The Unreal Engine is the most overrated engine of all time and it's mediocre.Last Reminant is garbage anyway.This lame excuse about the PS3 being hard to develop for is old.After MGS4 and LBP,I don't want to hear that crap anymore.

    Unreal Tournament was good, its gotta be the developer.  I cant see why Unreal was pretty darn good but others were horrid.  The Last Remnant was garbage anyway, Path of the Furon was a disaster, Area 51 and Turok were laughable at best.  Im kida glad that 'Path' and 'Remnant' didnt come over.

    I think he doesn't want to learn how to develope with the Cell precessor, it's not as easy to do, like it is on a graphics card, like the crappy 360. It's pure lazyness.     As much as I want to hate on Square right now, Takai does NOT represent all of the compnay's opinions. He hasn't been apart of hardly ANY projects, only 3 to date, and all of them have failed.

    So yess, Takai, I hope that the next title you work on is 360 exclusive. When it fails, and Nomura's PS3 exclusive game (FF Versus XIII) wins, you're going to feel pretty facking stupid.
