Square details FFXIII's Lightning character

Posted on July 16th, 2008 at 07:59 EDT

Square-Enix has shed some light on the mysterious female character present in the recent E3 2008 trailer for Final Fantasy XIII.

Speaking briefly with IGN this week, Producer Yoshinori Kitase revealed that the character goes by the alias of “Lightning,” and that she initially refuses to fight alongside other characters, emphasising one of the major themes present in the highly anticipated RPG.

“There’s almost sort of a rejection at the beginning,” explained Kitase, adding, “then the relationship builds from there. The trailer was crafted to portray that theme and get that message across.”

Elsewhere, Square also revealed that it is aiming to bring Final Fantasy XIII to North America and Europe within a shorter time frame than previous instalments in the franchise, though this essentially means there will be no additional content present in the western release.

Final Fantasy XIII is due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009.

Yawn....and some more FF13 news.  Just like I said.  They were holding back because reaveling too much would have shown that they went "low-spec" to make the 360 version.  Now FF13 will be everywhere 'til release.  From "Where is it?" to "Here it is again!".

I'll say it AGAIN. If you keep doing the whole 'ooooh square hates us!" bullshiest you;re just going to give M$ what they want. They Want you to abandon the game so that THEIR version sells more because Playstation owners turn their back on it. 36* owners dont even care about it. they few that will buy it willmake it look like they do if our numbers dont match or exceed. if you want to SUPPORT the PS3 at all you need to buy the PS3 version to show square that the PS3 is a viable enough platform to support with exclusives. If you dont then they will end up having to give Versus to 36* as well to offset production costs!

Not really alpha. The PS3 version drops on time. Everything said only suggest that the 360 will be a prt of the PC version.

Sounds like an interesting character.  I find it funny how people are treating the recent 360 news like it's not going to be available for the PS3 at all.  The only thing that changes is that more people get to play it.  You could argue that it'll be watered down as it is going multiplatform, but its been developed for the PS3 for ages.  Plus alot of multiplatform games look as great as exclusives these days.

This will be my last Final Fantasy, I would like more Versus XIII be the multiplatform insted this game.

I'm really really disapointed with $quare-Enix and I don't believe Versus still exclusive to PS3.

As I can see $quare release more games in that horrible machine than PS3 just like DS and PSP.

Maybe this will be my last generation of Playstation too.

It's always has and always will be about money. This is a for-profit company doing what has to be done to make profit, buy the game no matter what and only get upset if it's not comming out on your system, as for me I'm this just made me wanna buy both FF13 and Versus just to help Sony. but the worst thing you can do is NOT BUY the GAME and give 360 better overall numbers

I agree with you Alpha2 on the supporting the game still. I plan on purchasing it but that doesn't change the fact that SE shook hands with the devil at E3 after giving them acces to one of our most beloved exclusives. Yes I know....It's all about money when it comes down to it but Square has been a diffrent company since they merged with Enix. I really hope though, ours looks better and loads faster considering they can't make the 360's version cashe.

Hmm, i've always considered V13 more appealing, yesterdays announcement justifies it a little bit, however im not too bothered by it all.

This info makes the story sound alot more interesting because to be honest i wasn't that impressed with 12 because i thought the story wasnt as good as the previous installments.

Byuu= Doesn't understand the how the world works.  People have done everything in their power to make sure that the 500 dollars you spent is for nothing and you want to play the "I don't care" guy.  Well Wolverine, I guess that's easy when mommy pays for all this.  I work hard for my money.  And I bet you anything that I make more than you.  You are the idiot.  Sony gaming house was built on exclusives.  Every time they lose one, it's bad.  Whether you want to look at it or not.  I wasn't getting FF13, not my thing.  But it still affects me as a consumer, Idiot.  No boycotting is not the answer, but you need to look a little further along than a day ahead, and look at the big picture.  That goes for Alpha 2 as well, I don't give a &^*^&^ who you think you are or how right you think you are.  This system has been a stone's throw away from death since it was unveiled.  You know you used to sound like Alpha 2?  HD-DVD fans.

[Sigh] It's a real shame that people can be so narrow-minded about this issue. Now, I admit, I was as upset about the news as everyone. Matter-of-factly, I created a thread about it in the forum, but it got closed due to being made a mere minute after the first one that was made. In it, I said how I anticipated such a news, in a way, just not the way it turned out. In addition, the mere title of the thread suggested my ire.

That said, I'm not going to skip on this title simply because Square-Enix decided to go multi-platform. I don't believe that the PS3 will be "watered-down" simply because of that. And the reason I believe that is its PS3 exclusivity. It's still available for PS3 only in Japan. Square generally makes the game for Japan then localizes it for the other regions. Therefore, it would be optimized for PS3, localized for other regions. The Xbox 360 would be made separately, by a separate team with the North American and European regions in mind. Meaning, that will be optimized for the Xbox 360.

I'm sure each version will have its merits, and I strongly believe that the PS3 version will have the edge. The White Engine may have been modified to be compatible with multiple platforms, but the thing to remember is this: it was not modified to work with the PS3; it was engineered from the ground up to work for only the PS3, then was later modified to work for PC and Xbox.

Much like things games that are built specificially for Xbox then modified to the PS3 are superior to the latter, the things built specificially for the PS3 then modified for the Xbox will be superior to the Xbox version.

To be honest I will buy it although I have lost much respect for SE but like Alpha2 said hardly anyone I know who has a 360 AKA all my friends except me and like 6 other kids they play Ghost Recon, GTAIV and games that you kill or sports games. No one on 360 really will buy FF13. Its still being developed on Ps3 as the lead console.

Final fantasy what ? X, X-2 were soo boring.. 12 was ok..  frankly, if these games were called gluglu x, tutu 12, fifi 13....  hype would be totaly different..  for the news.. exlusive are a thing of the past, for this generation, with the toy wii selling like crazy, xbox360 being a GOOD console (despite the hardware, noise, etc..)..  Gaming cost on these new-gen console cost soo much that exclusive will be only from first party.. No problem with that, just own them both. if not, just enjoy what you have and don't stop breathing for what is going on on the other system.. aren't you supposed to Support your console and at first enjoy some GAMING time ?..

ps: MGS4.. what else ? so good, so pleasure if you're old/fan enough.. Thank you Kojima, just for this game I know why I had a PS3 since day one.

I didn't know there was an official release year for this game? I'd expect Japan to get it next year, but the US/EU version would prolly have to wait around 6 months!

As for additional contents, that could be implemented as dlc after release. BTW, I'm still getting this on PS3.

I'm probably going to sound too much like an adult, but I'm kinda glad its coming to the 360. I own a PS3, but I have a friend that's been a fan of Final Fantasy for many many years, and he owns a 360. He just got married and can't afford another $400 console, so I'm glad for him that he'll be able to play the game. There's absolutely no downside for me, as I'll just pick up the PS3 version. Its a win-win in my corner of the world.

Well, to be honest, Alpha2 is only half-right by stating (the obvious) that we need to buy this in support of the PS3. If there is indeed a serious "legion" of dedicated Sony FF fans that really wanted to show SE & stick it to M$, here's how:

Buy 2 copies. Play one and keep one sealed. You know there are some crazy collectors out there, especially once a game goes to the Greatest Hits label....just a thought.

@Odium - on a totally serious, non-joking note: thanks for your comments. The "stone's throw" one in particular. Just feel justified knowing that you're not the only one that feels frustrated with the whole situation. HeII, I just spit in my own coffee!

Alpha2 thinks the same way I do. Can't you guys see that if you all reject FF XIII the PS3 sales will suffer greatly not just square? Actually more so PS3 will suffer because 360 will make more off the title and the developer will favor them in the future. M$ wants all you to feel this way, that is why they worked so hard to get this game. Just buy the game..you were happy with FF games before so this one will be no different.
