Smashing the sales record for High Def movies, the Blu-ray release of Spider-Man 3 has sold over 130,000 copies in the first week.
Until the release of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy on Blu-ray, Transformers held the record for largest HD release, with 115,000 units sold in the first week. With the next-gen media format war still far from being over, it is these big releases that sway consumers into choosing one side over the other. Furthermore, the fact that Blu-ray once again holds the record for biggest selling title, there will be more publicity shining blue this holiday season.
One interesting tidbit is that even though this Blu-ray release has sold record breaking numbers, only about 30% of the 400,000 copies shipped actually made it into peoples living rooms. These numbers do not account for any copies that were bundled with the 40GB PlayStation 3 that Sony recently released, however.
Be sure to check back for further information on the Blu-ray front.

Go Blu-ray! How many copies of the DVD sold in the first week? And how many people are holding out for the Trilogy Pack? I already got mine about a month ago! ;) I didn't really understand why Australia got it before the US?!
good for sony and bluray psn id J08hawks
So hows the sales going for hd-dvd transformers eh xbots?
I think there should also be data acknowledged from the bundle pack in order to get a more detailed portion of the sales figures to be exact.
Great news....but I still think if Transformers was released on Bluray, it would still be holding the HD record first week sales title....but thats just me.
wow, I didn't know Transformers did that well. I wish this stupid war was over already.
psn id: gingo.... this is huge for blu ray because transformers was the must see hi def film this year and if spider man3 overtook it that must mean this war is truely over
Unfortunately this information isn't entirely correct. Paramount reported they sold 190,000 copies of Transformers, but NPD, a company that tracks sales, reported 115,000 copies sold. Keep in mind the NPD information doesn't include certain retailers such as Walmart. Sony has reported they sold 130,000 copies of Spider-man 3 on Blu-ray, but that number hasn't been backed by NPD (their data should be out later today). Right now you're comparing apples to organges; NPD's data could show SM3 sold 95,000 copies, which would be less than the 115,000 they reported for Transformers.
Gord
nice to hear
exclusivly on bluray, cha ching.
What I also think is interesting is that Spider-Man 3 really wasn't that great of a movie; in fact, I'd say Transformers is the better movie. Despite that, Spider-Man 3 STILL outsold Transformers, so I think that's pretty good proof that Transformers would have sold a LOT more if it were on Blu-Ray. Nice job, Paramount morons.
The majority of HD-DVD owners have a player, not an add-on, so you can figure most of the 115,000 Transformers discs were not from Xbox 360 users (It can be downloaded in high def on the Xbox marketplace). So given the fact that most Blu-ray sales are from PS3 owners... this is embarrassing!! Where would Blu-ray be without the help of the Playstation? Extinct!
Wow spiderman 3 isn't even that good of a movie. This is good for the blu-ray format being able to continue to sell more movies then HD-DVD, then on the other hand I couldn't really careless what HD format wins.
Transformers would have still hold this record if it had been released on blu-ray instead of HD-DVD.
