The new PlayStation 3 Firmware Update 2.35 is now live and available for download. According to Sony the update fixes compatibility issues for a few PS3 titles, however not for GTA IV.
"I just wanted to give everyone a quick heads up that a PS3 firmware update (v2.35) will be released shortly. This is a relatively minor update to improve stability of some PS3 titles," wrote Director, PlayStation Network Operations Eric Lempel.
SCEA's Al de Leon further commented, "I just want to clarify that this upcoming firmware update isn’t related to GTA IV. For those of you who may still have an issue playing the game on your PS3, we have identified a solution that should resolve the issue. You can contact SCEA Consumer Services for support — their contact info and hours of service, as well as more information on this issue, are available in our Knowledge Center (http://playstation.custhelp.com/)."

Of course it has to be related to GTA4, it's ridiculous to think it isn't! IT'S A SYSTEM SELLER!! Anyway, i haven't experienced any problems with it on the single player, but on the multiplayer side of it, well, let's just say I've been lucky enough to play a few games before the pretty message saying: "You have been disconnected to one or more players. Returning to single player" It's a big update so, I hope it "fixes" something I can notice.
EDIT: the only good thing about the online is that it's lag-free for me, but well, thats from the 2 out of 50 times trying to log on.

This is a timely reply from SONY & even though this update doesn't rectify the GTA4 issue, they are starting to get on the ball with these things.
At the very least, they are keeping the consumer notified.
Of course, there shouldn't have been such an issue to begin with, but chit happens.;)

for those that dont know: GTA supplied its own fix and the reason the PS3 and indeed the PSP updates are always slightly larger each time is because they replace the firmware in its entirity plus the new fixes, so patch No1 for example = 28mb patch No 2 will = 28.5mb.
