PSU talks with Peter Moore

Posted on May 9th, 2008 at 16:12 EDT

Over the last couple of weeks, PlayStation Universe has had multiple opportunities to sit down and talk with the big man over at EA, Peter Moore. As Moore is an ex-Microsoft employee, we’re sure a lot of you felt that this may result in a lower quality product for the PlayStation 3 in some grand conspiracy by Microsoft to shaft Sony’s users. The end result of that conspiracy may have looked evident after The Orange Box debacle, but has never truly been further from the truth as Moore has told us personally “I absolutely love the PlayStation.” This came in a music-intensified environment in New York with his arms skyrocketing out in exclamation as he made the claim. It felt genuine – it felt real.

Fast-forward two weeks and PlayStation Universe is in Vancouver covering an EA Canada event that includes such titles as FIFA ’09, NHL ’09, NCAA ’09 and Madden NFL ’09 just to name a few. If you’re curious on how that went, we’ll have full-fledged previews for you guys once the embargo date has passed. However, while there, we also had another opportunity to get some one-on-one time with Moore in order to discuss not only EA BIG’s future, but to also discuss some of the reasoning for Brett Favre as the cover athlete for Madden NFL 2009. As most of you know, Madden has never featured a retired player on their cover and this would definitely be a trend-breaking year as Favre announced his retirement during the off-season. We had the chance to ask Moore why EA decided to change their history of cover athlete selections.

“Brett Favre was chosen to be the cover athlete of Madden before his decision to retire. When Favre made his announcement to leave the NFL, many in the EA studio felt against continuing with him as the cover athlete but in the end we decided to go ahead with it,” said Moore. “I think Brett Favre is a great choice. I've watched him over the years and anyone who can last that long playing on Lambeau field and hold as many records as he does, deserves a spot on the cover of Madden.”

The next obvious question to ask of Moore was, “What about the curse? Will this put an end to that?” As many know already, the Madden cover athlete has always fallen victim to either a poor year statistically or a season ending injury. With Brett Favre somewhat retired (hasn’t filed his paperwork), he seemed unlikely for this odd trend to continue.

“As for the Madden Curse, Brett's retired, so unless the curse hunts him down outside of the field, I don't think it will have an effect on him. But let's hope that doesn't happen."

We’re not exactly sure how to react to the situation as the Madden curse always gave gamers something extra to watch out for during the NFL Season. We’ll have to get used to the idea of not expecting a leg to break or a tendon to tear (unless Favre trips while hunting or something along those lines). While a lot of us have enjoyed past games such as SSX, NFL Street and NBA Street; EA BIG seemed to be taking a backburner trip with the introduction of “Freestyle” from EA. Freestyle is currently developing three new IP’s, one of which includes the upcoming boxing title, Facebreaker. This left a lot of people wondering about what would then happen to the EA BIG franchises.

To this, Moore replied, "[With] the EA BIG brand, the theme was sports to the extreme, and with the way the market is shifting, we‘re wanting to adapt and move our focus to a more casual gaming experience. We have Freestyle coming in with the first of three new IP's being Facebreaker. During this time we will be phasing out EA BIG, and over the next couple months be deciding what titles from EA BIG we will want to move under the Freestyle, EA Sports, and EA Games brands or drop completely."

It sounds like every franchise under the BIG umbrella may not be making it through the game filter that EA continues to provide console owners. While nothing is ... (continued on next page)

this article felt like "please love Moore" theme.
I don't really care much for EA games I've never been much into sport games; I'd rather play sports for real... not that I'm good at it, but it's fun.

Geez people, it's called a JOB.  It was his JOB to espouse everything 360 game related and present it as the very best, no matter what he might have felt personally.  And, the 360 is a good game machine, he no doubt DID believe much or all of what he said.

Why does that mean though, that he can not like any other console?  It certainly wouldn't have been in his best interest to tell people that he liked other consoles as well while he was at MS.  That would have been a big deal and detrimental to him and the company.  Now however, he doesn't have to be a one-sided cheerleader.  So what's so unbelievable about a guy saying "Yeah, I like that too!" now, especially when his position now ALLOWS him to make statements like that?

Remember, Madden '09 for PS3 is not 60fps as well, something it was NOT before he came there.  Might be due to him, more likely isn't, but regardless, if he was part of some big MS/EA conspiracy to help MS out more, wouldn't it be to his advantage to keep the PS3 version down?  He's certainly in a position to do that if he wanted to....  People need to relax a little.  Not everything is a conspiracy.

hmm going by the last few comments you have left on PSU, im wondering.. Are you on teh wrong website? I mean we get enough of the xbox losers making accounts and comming in to say crap, but to make an account and repeatedly bash sony and the PS3? maybe your looking for teamxbox.com  I think you might be a little happier there.

Forget EA. The only thing that EA is good at is Sports games and I don't waste money on Sports games.

The Burnout series and BLACK were are the best games that EA has ever made in my opinion. EA needs to develop BLACK 2. I'm looking forward too Dead Space a little bit and I hope that it turns out to be pretty good.

@fanboybyrights: Get the heck out of here man and go play your Crapbox until it RROD's. Us PS3 owners don't have time for your crap. The entire Killzone 2 game will be bigger than both Gears of War and Gears of War 2 combined, and just 5 levels of Killzone 2 will be bigger than 1 Gears of War game. Get out of here and go play your little upscaled DVD games. DVD was so Last Gen.

My 2cents is that Peter Moore was told to leave Microsoft and have EA buy as much of the software business as he could.  Then EA and Microsoft would form an under the table partnership in wich EA would fully support the 360 and hurt the PS3 as much as they could.  I could even see EA and Microsoft merging in the future.  It has been done before and given that both are American companies, with execs moving between the companies this seems all too real.

If I were Sony I would make damn sure that Take2 does NOT get aquired by EA or at the very least Sony should own a bunch of shares of Take2.

Peter Moore can say whatever he wants but it is clear that he hates Sony.  Not that Sony has done EA any favors over the years...

Peter Moore: "It's just business don't take personally..."  Lol that would be funny, if he said this. But let's hope he's not trying to cheat us again with all this PR... And it's good, that he's saying he loves the Playstation, if he isn't telling lies hopefully.

let's see how EA handles Madden 09 before we embrace Peter Moore. If he wants to send a real message let's see the  PS3 version  of madden 09 running at the same frame rates as the 360 version and launching on he same day with co-op advertizing for both MS and Sony so it does not look like an xbox exclusive, lol. Oh please no PS3 version only buggs!

Its Ok for him to like Playstation he mot probably had the PS1 and PS2 and home through the years. I bet Mr Miyamoto has a PS3 in his front room but no one knows as we al know how upset Nintendo fanbois wil be if they new their own god had a PS3. IGN have footage of Miyamoto playing on the eyetoy on PS2 in one of the gaming events, E3 a few years ago I think it was, when Sony was showing the eyetoy for the first time in US.
