LittleBigPlanet 'copyright' explained

Posted on August 26th, 2008 at 08:08 EDT

We all know LittleBigPlanet is centered around creating your own content to share with the world, but what happens to those of you wanting to keep a lock on your creations for fame and glory? Over to Media Molecule's Alex Evans for an explination.

"We have a very simple system that we call 'copyright' in the game, which isn't copyright in the legal sense," said Evans, during an interview with Eurogamer. "You can basically dictate the distribution rights on any object you create. If you put something in your level as a collectable item, people can collect it."

"People can control who comes into the level, both by how hard it is and by giving away keys, but you can also choose whether to copyright that object."

Collected copyrighted objects can be used in your own levels, but you'll not be able to share them out with anybody else. If an object has no lock, you're free to modify and distribute as you please.

"It's a really simple way to allow people to share or maintain ownership," Evans concluded.

LittleBigPlanet is set for release on October 29.

That sounds good but somebody could just create it themselves. Yes it would be hard in some cases but you could still get what you're after.

Ya Post 8 is right. Because once you see it... you have the idea, you can then create it. We have a will, so there is a way. MAKE IT YOURSELF!!!! hahahaha. (too much? I never know)

To number 8-

That's a scenario that can't be over come. I'm a tattoo artist, and I have this problem in my industry. People can go on tattoo design sites like TattooJohny etc and look for designs. Now these sites charge for the designs, but instead of people payin for them, alot just redraw them themselves or take a photo with their phones...

There's not alot anyone can do, there's only so much protection you can offer without a form of over sensorship I guess.

At the end of the day, it's better to show that they have concern and are tryint o help us, rather than just leave us to it.

Controlled situation, with a few rogues, or a completly copy-happy application?

I vote for the first option.

I don't get it ... does that mean you can't publish a level with somebody else's copyrighted object in it but you can use it to play against your friends on your own console?  Seems a bit silly in this day and age when everything is ripped off by China and sold for half the price in the rest of the world.  Can you buy objects from other players for PSN store credits or what?

I'm still confused on if map makers can have the option to sell their maps instead of give them away for free.   I wouldn't want everyone selling their maps and some wouldn't be good enough to really put a price on, but if you spent a lot of time on a map and created a bunch of custom textures and stuff for it, why not get a little money for it?  Of course instead of that, a  cool thing they could do is have competitions, where maybe at the end of each month, whoever has the highest rated/most downloaded new map for that month gets a monitary prize, maybe of $100 for first, $50 for second, and $30 for third.  Perhaps instead of actually money sent to us, that could be used to buy things on the Playstation Store.  I mean the people will be creating the maps and awesome content that will make others want to buy their game, so why not spend a little money on their fans?  Instead of having to pay money to play a game, actually have a game where you could make money by playing it.

I personally think, that this thing is stupid. I mean, u can put a price on ur created map and others will buy it and u will earn money. But who's really going to buy it??? Almost noone, 80% if even not 90% LBP players wont want to spend their money n they will not share their created maps, they will just create new maps and will hope that one day one moron will come and buy their map for 5$. Percent that it will happen, will be 1 out of 1000000 as there will be millions of LBP players.

Much smarter would be if every user created content would be for free. So everybody will be happy.

okay thats awesome it doesnt have anything to do with money, it just is away to give more control to the creators (us)

and as for people copying others, im sure if its setup so not just anyone can play it, then they cant see what it looks like
