Leaked details on PlayStation Home Beta

Posted on March 1st, 2008 at 17:55 EDT

Leaked videos of PlayStation Home v.0.83 have just hit YouTube, showing off all the latest additions to Home including; functionality with in-game PSP, bubble machine items, chess, Home theatre, and more.

The first video is an introduction showing off a few new places in Home as well as the In-Home game Chess. The first place the player visits is a clothing store called "Threads" where players can purchase clothing items for their character. While the current clothes in the store are free, having a "checkout" and "confirm transaction" screen makes us believe some clothes will eventually cost money.

After leaving Threads, the player moves upstairs to the chess tables and briefly shows how gamers will participate and play Chess.

The video ends with the player entering a store currently called "Home Stuff", where at this time no items are available. Our guess is that "Home Stuff" will be the store where gamers can purchase specialty items like the recently revealed bubble machine.

Moving on to part 2. The next video shows Home's use of the in-game PSP. Using the functionality of the Home PSP, players will be able to access such things as:

- Community (Message of the Day, News, Handy Links, etc)
- Help (First time in Home, Character Customization, Moving to new locations, Your Home Space, and other step-by-step guides)
- Communication (phone a friend, accept call, reject call, etc)
- Game Launching (Create a game, Join a game, View Player List, Cancel game)
- Locations (My Home Space, Home Square, Game Space, Home Theatre, Market Place, Owned Spaces)
- Settings (Themes (skins), Pop-Up Colour, sound, chat window, controls, communication)
- Personal (Go to Wardrobe, Redecorate Home Space, My Inventory, My Purchases, My Profile)

One thing that's interesting about the Create-a-Game menu is that when selected it seems to pull up a list of games that the player may own. The list from the video includes such games as Call of Duty 4, Virtua Tennis 3, SuperStar Dust HD, Motorstorm, Flow, and a few others. Are these games already using Home integration or can Home use any game you own for the PS3?

The last video in the series shows off a few new things including the new bubble machine and Home Theatre. The player begins showing how to access items and interact with them in the world. In this case the bubble machine.

Moving to the Home Theatre, the player brings up the in-game PSP once again, showing how players can create game sessions, in this case Call of Duty 4. Whats interesting is that while in Home, players can choose how many player slots they want available as well as private slots. When the game creation process is finished, a controller icon appears above the players head and a message pops up stating:

"Session Created
Players may now join your game. You may hide this window and re-open at any time from the Game Launching Menu in the PSP."

With rumors of the Home Public Beta launching this month, it shouldn't be too long until everyone can get their hands on this spectacular multiplayer world. Stay tuned to PSU for all your PlayStation Home news.

Home isnt a game. It IS however still very broken, you do NOT want it in the shape it's in right now.... maybe when we get to version 1.0 but not yet.

I swear these leaks are probably the biggest reason why they havent let it out to more people, just think how many people would be dissapointed to actually get in a have to deal with the Beta issues that these videos don't show.

Home looks the bomb.....Can't wait and its free. I think this will be a major selling point for the PS3. XBL is very good but it has nothing like this, I have second life on my PC and it is boring. The way Home brings everything together is very clever I think I may have to quit my job just so I have the time that this clearly deserves when it goes live............

I, like everyone else want a release date before everyone starts to lose interest. Come on Sony the UK market are heading for there 1st anniversary, give us some good news soon please.

@21 I believe Home is going under the Network icon in the XMB. I think that's why they changed the way the XMB was in that update. I also think someone said something about it at a conference somewhere and I'm sorry I don't remember when or where it was. They must have thought it was better under Game

The reason people call it a game is because when they see HOME, they think about playing pool, bowling, arcade games, chess, checkers, chatting with friends with the microphone. Its purpose is to provide an effect way for the community to get together, but most people just see it as a fun RPG game where you walk around and do things with people. Besides the fact that you can't fight or level up, its exactly like an MMORPG technically. Because its so similar like that, people call it a game. It just feels weird to call it a service anyway.

yes, truly amazing :)...but....if the main HOME is v.100. or watever then that means it prolly wont be out for ages, think about all the time in between the HOME updates, wich means the main thing will prolly be MONTHS AND MONTHS away, and if sony doesant give us the beta in ver 8.0 then we will have to get it in ver, 9.0, and thAT update is months on end away, so heres hoping they give us the 8.0 beta, but @alpha2, im intrigued, is HOME really in that bad of shape right now?

People call Home a game because they keep seeing it compared to other social MMORPGs like SL. There are simularities but Home does not live off of the same things that SL needs to survive. There is no Selling of land, no rolling hills to explore or tresure hunts, no playing virtual kissy face with social emotes, there is no economic system of trade. You might be able to build content to sell in the future but that's still well in the future and again not the full purpose of Home which is to meet people and play games with them.

@IONIXX :There are random crash bugs, issues with furniture placement, graphical glitches all throughout Home. The general function of the thing works great, it's when you start... doing things that it seems to have the most problems, Buying furniure, starting multiplayer games. the occasional game of chess or checkers (although this one seems like it was fixed in the previous update) sometimes just crossing from one location to another causes a crash, It's all coding issues that can be fixed I'm certain but the devs are so ungodly slow about it that it makes you really wonder how much manpower is really on the project. Since the last update more things are broken than are fixed since the previous version. Granted they added a lot of stuff but none of it is as important as the main functions of Home which remain in a questionable state.

People have already lost interest.  I used to be dying for Home last fall when it was supposed to be released.  Almost 6 months later I really dont care anymore.  Some people might remember that Home was actually DELAYED untill last FALL! I am sure sony is going to limit the heck out of everything you can do for free.  I am not going to waist $50  bucks for a virtual house though...  Chances are that if you dont like second life, you are going to hate home.  Sorry but when you promise so much when you have no intention of delivering,  but just to sell consoles, that just pisses me off.  Dont expect an open beta for a long time, and dont expect the finished home for about a year.  Also when it does role out, dont expect people to actually use it a few months after the release.  Again, sorry, but it is VERY hard to become optimistic about home anymore.  All I see is an example sonys lack of dedication to owners that xbox fanboys will continue to piss us off with.

Brandonh33, speak for yourself. Something tells me when Home is released they will encounter problems like COD4 did. "We didn't know there was going to be that much interest, it bogged our servers," they'll say. I'd spend money on my "apartment", not $50 though. H3ll, if Sony can make money doing things like that more power to them. I'm sure others will do the same.

@Brandon

I'll tell you what I DO expect when Home is released...

...you downloading it with the rest of us doing the robot dance and making an idget of yourself not unlike how you did with your post.  Everyone's agitated over the delays, but there's no denying the achievement that is Home.  Not only that, but it's pretty stupid to claim that interest is lost after dozens of people before your post had just stated that they can't wait for it.  "Misery love company", I guess.

posted 3:53pm EST - March 3rd, 2008

Well i guess this is what you get when you post something even remotely negative about the ps3 on a fanboy site.  It is not just my opinion, if you go over to sites like cnet or even the playstation blog there are tons of people that dont even care anymore.  I love my ps3, i hate 360 and wii, but there are just some things that we need to realize.  Sure i am going to download home and be fairly excited for a while, but sony blew it!  I dont like people saying what i said in my previous post and I indicated that in the end of my post! one of the worst things about all these delays are all of the 360 fanboys that wont shut up about it!  Home might actually be really cool but that doesnt mean sony didnt blow it.
