Japanese PS3 sales decline ahead of slim launch

PlayStation 3 sales in Japan have slumped 65 percent from the previous week ahead of the launch of the revamped slim model due in early September, reports Media Create.

Sony’s home console managed to shift 2,052 units during the week ended August 24, putting it at the bottom of the hardware pile. By comparison, its predecessor shifted over 3,000 units, while Xbox 360 trumped both machines with just fewer than 9,000 units sold.

PSP managed to muscle its way to second place with just north of 27,000 unit sales, beaten out by the Nintendo DS. Overall it was a decidedly underwhelming week, with sales dropping across the board for all major format. However, with PS3 Slim launching in Japan on September 3, it's fair to assume the next few weeks will prove far more of an auspicious period for Sony.

See below for full sales figures.

01 Nintendo DS - 65,313
02 PlayStation Portable - 27,187
03 Nintendo Wii - 26,972
04 Xbox 360 - 8,979
05 PlayStation 2 - 3,295
06 PlayStation 3 - 2,052

    Wow this is unexpected!

[Edit] Sorry, I thought it meant *after* the PS3 Slim launched....Fail, I know :(

naa they all just want to buy the Slim so they are waiting for it... hence why the PS3 is selling less just prior to its launch.

Not surprised at all by the low PS3 sales, nowhere was stocking them leading up to Gamescom. Here's hoping for some great weeks!

This is very expected, with news of slim coming out, who would buy an older model ps3. They are waiting for Slim to drop, and those salls are going to be high.

Who keeps buying Wiis and the Ds.  It would seem, by now, everyone should have 2 of each.

    SHOCKING!

I am shocked that people who are looking to buy a PS3 are waiting for the newer version to come out soon, this is genuinely news to me and I needed to be told it by a gaming news website since I would have never guessed this myself.

Exactly Lucky Bob! Who on earth is buying the god awfull Wii and DS, (under 10's and the elderly) the Wii is just not funny its terrible, every time i have the misfortune of "having a go" on the Wii it gets worse every time.

Lets not forget, as of this week, Japan is suffering from the worst unemployment in recent history. I think that would be a pretty big factor in this.

Not surprised, also didn't they say that in Japan retailers basically were out of Ps3's so maybe that played a roll in the low numbers also.

    • 3:11pm BST - August 28th, 2009

I didn't look at any hard numbers, but it seemed like the PS3 sales numbers stagnated AFTER EVERY PRICE DROP RUMOR.  I wonder why?

    • 3:25pm BST - August 28th, 2009

This is why Sony does not confirms stuff like the Slim. Including that price drop. People will hold off. Want to watch a company fall, say they are having a price cut and new hardware!

  15. MassiveKrabs | RealMadrid88R9

    • 3:34pm BST - August 28th, 2009

The main reason for this, is that almost every retailer in Japan is out of stock and hasn't recieved any shipments in almost three weeks. This is probably just another PR move by Sony. They are trying to make it seem like no one is buying the PS3, and when stores get the new and sales go through the roof, then they would say that it was the PS3 slim was the factor...

well 40-70% of gamers in Japan already have PS3s (but most have Wiis) so.... i wouldnt count on PS3 owners buying another one so yeah the sales are going to decline

would be hilarious if it just stayed like this p.s @20 40-70%, i thought it was more like 1-100%.........

I wonder if it has something to do with Sony not restocking stores, causing a very limited amount of sales.

    Nah! Couldn't be...

Ok so instead of wanting the chance to play games such as God of War 3, Uncharted: among thieves, people opt for the DS, where you can test your skills in...Cooking Mama!

I guess the gamers of japan did not like the phat PS3.  gamers here in ameria
and the rest of world was not brothed by the  phat PS3.
BUT IAM SURE THE SLIM WILL KICK BUTT in japan come sept 1

    • 7:24pm BST - August 28th, 2009

Japan wants something smaller as opposed to something bigger? Who'd have guessed?

Of course, game system sales are down all the way around. Even DSi... Seems like a bad time for gamers in the land of the rising sun.

  27. Two4DaMoney

    • 7:45pm BST - August 28th, 2009

@15 It has nothing to do with pr "bragging" about the slims. It's about getting the older models sold off.

    • 7:54pm BST - August 28th, 2009

Of course, why wouldn't you wait for the new model?

LOL well here in Canada, things are totally NOT the same.

I am working at Future Shop Quebec and last week we sold  187 ps3's vs 3 wii's and 1 xbox. And that was for this whole week.

The slim was out this wednesday and it R A P E D the competition.

And we even had the --new-- xbox elite pack with wireless included and halo 3 plus hdmi cables for 329$ Can... AND no one cared lol.

And I dont live in some secluded area. I'm downtown montreal.

Actually I think this data was taken even before the slim was announced so next period should be especially good with the price drop and new slim version hitting the market right now.

    • 10:06pm BST - August 29th, 2009

of course nothing surprising this predicts of great sales for next week,i mean why would you pay more when you can wait and have it for less?
