IBM architect defends Cell, PS3 Call of Duty 4

Posted on October 16th, 2007 at 07:14 EDT

IBM architect Jim Kahle has spoken out against criticism directed towards the PlayStation 3 version of Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warefare, which argued that the game is visually no better on Sony's platform than its Xbox 360 and PC counterpart.

In defence, Kahle highlighted the importance of pushing next-generation gaming boundaries beyond that of just graphics, stressing that Artificial Intelligence (AI) was to play a more prominent role than before.

“I think we've got to get back to where is this edge of graphics going to be. I'm not sure that pushing the graphics all the way to the extreme edge is where people are going to go. It's going to be the simulation part, the AI”, he said.

He also added that gamers have yet to see the full potential of the PS3, stating, "You haven't seen the full power of the PlayStation [3] exploited yet; "That's what we worked on... we still have a ways to go."

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will be released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC next month.

Call of Duty 4 is an important game. As we get closer to play time now they about face and say "Graphics isnt everything"... WTF?

I expect it to be much better than Xbox 360 because Kaz stood up and promissed the world that PS3 would offer vastly better graphics. He also promised 380 new games by year end...Kaz??? You had better come good on the promisses.

http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/08/side-by-side-co.html in this url seems that PS3 maps are more detailed than 360

but I have, researched a little more and the 360 beta its older, this is a response from infity forums:

During development we frequently tweak the color balances in the levels to achieve the look and feel that we’re shooting for. What you’re seeing in these two videos are two completely different visual styles for the level that were tried. That’s why the older 360 shot has a distinct blueish tint, while the more recent PS3 shot shows the more appropriate middle eastern feeling lighting.

You can also some differences in the geometry in the two shots. Broken walls, windows, etc… Every level goes through at least one “detail pass”. The designers will rough in geometry and do a certain level of detail, but it’s the environment artists that really make each level shine. The version of the level shown in the PS3 shot has been through one or two more detail passes than the one shown in the 360 shot. That said, all levels (single player and multi) use identical geometry and textures across all platforms. If nothing else, the shots show an interesting look at the evolution of a level.

The mistake people make is that they assume "better graphics" means that a game actually has to literally look better than another platform, but that isn't the case. "Better graphics" can simply mean that there is much more going on in the game world.

For example, a beach scene may at first look identical on both platforms, but it's only when you look closer that you see the trees on one are fixed, while on the other they flex in the breeze.

It's fair to say, I think, that the PS3 and 360 are fairly evenly matched in the graphics department, in terms of what they can display. It's the power behind the scenes that can be used to enhance those graphics with 'real-world' touches that will be the main difference.

The best example of this so far is Killzone 2 - the weather effects and lighting are well ahead of anything else on PS3, let alone 360. It's power that gets over-looked, because all the graphics whores are interested in is what they can see - they literally take everything at face value.

At least when pushed the PS3 won't burst into flames while blinking red lights at you.

That's the thing, wit the Cell is unknown territory and it seems it scares some developers, like he said he PS3 isn't bein pushed to it's limits, and just think that the games you see now, like Heavenly Sword, Lair, Warhawk are all still crazy and it's bein pushed only on a fraction of wat the PS3 can do and it's still keepin up with XBOX360 & PC imagine wen they do realize the power and unleash the beast that's hidden within! Then it's OVA! It's not only graphics that's the PS3 can put out, but it's the internal gadgets and technology under the hood, being able to handle many tasks at once and having independant memory usage for each is just incredible....time is all it needs....

So the creator of the Cell says it's not about graphics.  NICE!  Wish Sony told us this a year ago.

I think the graphics on ps3 will always be sharper and more detailed and the 360 will run at a higher frame rate thats just how it is....for now

The focus will be prominently on the AI in the near future for many of the games I think. Graphics difference whether its from the 360 or PS3 will be based on the beholder no matter how much it get improved over time. :)

@Paranoimia

I agree, the PS3 can make the environments come to life.

I think there should be a more of a limit to the AI than visuals. Who wants untra-realistic AI to kick your a*s? (I can't believe a*s is a banned word) AI doesn't exist in games anyway, to have AI the PS3 cell would have to be as complex as a human brain and the most advanced computers to date are not even as complex as a rat. Computers can't make decisions and think so AI doesn't exist. AI in games was explained perfectly on Blade Interactive website but that info is no longer there.

Its all just scripts people. Imagine having the first levels in a FPS game and you had to get past the enemy which was controlled by human players, You would never complate the level, I hope the enemy gets no where near that level of intelligence, it would make the games unplayable. This is why many have said the AI in MGS4 doesn't seem that clever. It would be deliberate to make it easier to sneak about and take down the enemy soldiers. Some comments about the barrel roll in MGS4 was that they said that the enemy would have heared you roll at them and would have moved out of the way. The enemy will get barrelled down not because the AI sucks but if they did hear this and avoided the barrel every time, it would take out this part of the gameplay and this move would become pointless.

I like to see visuals pushed and physics but AI only to a certain point that doesn't make the game unplayable.

I hope they don't push those 360s any harder or Microsoft's return department is going to be working overtime.  Not to mention all those cardboard coffins.
