Heaps of fresh info on Square’s hotly anticipated Final Fantasy XIII has surfaced within the pages of the latest issue of Japan’s Famitsu magazine.
Among the crop of juicy details divulged by fellow FFXIII team members Tetsuya Nomura and Motomu Toriyama includes confirmation that the PlayStation 3 version of the mammoth RPG won’t require installation, as well as news that the game will indeed support Trophies.
Furthermore, Toriyama also touched on the game’s load times, stating that the only time you’ll experience such events is when the action hops location from town to field. Apparently, the technical boffins on the FFXIII team specifically tackled the issue of loading times early on to ensure the action runs as smoothly as possible.
Elsewhere, Nomura-san turned his attention to FFXIII’s ever-expanding character roster, specifically new girl Oerba Yu Fang. Apparently, this sultry black-haired sort was originally conceived as a male character before the team ultimately switched the role to a female instead. In the process, Fang was sexed up at the expense of Lightning’s image in order to differentiate the two.
Nomura then discussed the character of Sazh, revealing that early concepts had him sporting an outlandish hat – that is, despite already having a gigantic Afro on his noggin, which also happens to house a baby Chocobo. Finally, Toriyama briefly hinted at a returning Final Fantasy hero who will play a major role in the events of FFXIII, which all but confirms the appearance of the ubiquitous Cid character who has showed up in previous iterations of the franchise.
Final Fantasy XIII is due out on PS3 in Japan on December 17, with a western release scheduled for spring 2010.

No install and minimal loading is great news. They said in the full interview that all the environments will be seamless.
Can't wait to see what role Cid will play (main character, good guy, mole, villain ect...)
Also want to see more on Oreba Yun Fang. I like her character design and weapon + she has Bahamut!

Fail. No install and minimal loading is just a sign of good devs.
If the game did have an install then people would be saying 'PS3 version has an install because of the 360'. I speak the truth.
End of the day some games do and some don't. Doesn't make a difference if it's exclusive or not. Latest example being Ratchet and Clank CIT which has a mandatory installation.

so that means that people on X360 that have the model with no HDD (about one third as it was the only one for a long time) won't be able to play the game at all because they can't install the game??? wow, great technology, Microsoft!

That explains why MGS4 has an install right? Right?
People are going to complain about SE no matter what.

You need to check the hundreds of games that have an install on PS3 and also run 360 with no install.
As 9 pointed out, the vast majority of multi-platform games run better on 360, install or no install.
The reason for the install is because the Blu-Ray player drive only runs at 2x. The way around this is to load the data into the cashe (512mb on PS3, 1G on 360) in the background while a cut scene is playing. The 360 has an 8x drive, meaning installs are optional.

@14 and 15: I think it's funny because I was just talking to a friend of mine about this same exact thing yesterday. I told him that because FFXIII is on the 360 as well that I would guarantee there to be trophies. I do; however, think it's lame. No point in having trophies in an RPG IMO. But, whatever, I'm still getting this game. Versus might not have them even though they ARE "supposedly" mandatory now. I just don't see the point of trophies in an RPG. (Demon's Souls is a different story)

@9- FFXIII is being developed on PS3's hardware. If you don't recall, FFXIII development started on PS3 first, way down the line, it's being ported to the 360, because it is easier to port from the PS3, to the 360, because of how advanced the Cell is, compaired to the weak hardware on the 360. The developers get better results, and it's alot more less expensive for there wallets. So, im pretty sure, that the PS3's version will be fine. @16- There are no hundreds of PS3 games that require installs, only some. There are a few 360 games that do require installs also. And, when you say most majority of multiplatform released games play better on the 360, im sorry, YOUR WRONG! Most of the multiplatform games do play the same, just some use the internal ram differently, and same goes for the HDD's. Where are you getting this sht, M$? By the way, they don't use the 512mb for preinstall, the internal HDD is used for preinstall, which is used so there is no loading times during gameplay, and also used for cut scene's. The 360 is going to have to stop, and load up scene's that are coming up, if the 360 doesn't have a preinstall done, you know, like Oblivion. Oh, and the blu-ray drive doesn't run at 2x, it run's at 9x. The 360 doesn't have 1g of ram, it has 512, just like the PS3, but it is set up as one memory bank, where the PS3 is set up 256k/256k, split. Installs are not optional, when it comes to preinstalling info, so the game run's smoother, the disk drive's have nothing to do with install's. Disk drive's do nothing but read information off a disk, that's what they were designed to do. PLEASE, get your spec's correct, and stop believing the lie's M$ tell's you, you fcking TROLL!!! Sorry, I know hardware, specially the 360's, and the PS3's, I studied them before they even launched into the market, so I know the differance.

I think stevej was trying to say that the ps3 and 360 load the data on to the hard drive during the cut seen load between the two areas. As well as the size of the data being 512MB on to the ps3 hdd and 1GB on the 360hdd.
stevej-
"load the data into the cashe (512mb on PS3, 1G on 360) in the background while a cut scene is playing."
P.S. I think you mean 9MB per second not 9X. The bluray drive transfers at 9MB. It is indeed 2X. although, being that the pits on the blu disc are smaller and closer than on a dvd it can spin at a slower RPM and read more Data. The 360 is capable of reading up to 15MB per second on its 1st layer and as slow as 4MB on the second. most developers place streaming data on the first layer to give the 360 a performance boost. with proper data placement the they can average about 11-12MB.

I dunno if I'm completely thrilled with the no-installs thing, I mean, there was a reason that MGS4 had a mandatory install. It was because of the size of it, because the 2x reader couldn't get the information off the Blu-Ray quick enough for fluid gameplay. Does that mean it'll run slower, or suffer from lagging or jerking, do you think?
I mean, Forza 3 is going to have a mandatory install for one of its discs, but that could be so you can play all the cars on both discs? I dunno. A 15 minute installation doesn't bother me at all if it's going to produce a better game.
If this is going to live up to the hype, and be optimized for both systems, then there should be a mandatory install for the PS3, right?
