As if videogames were not getting more expensive already, how about an extra 1% sales tax added specifically to videogames? Well this is an idea that a Wisconsin state senator is proposing.
Senator Jon Erpenbach (D-Middleton) is pondering the idea of allowing 17-year olds to be tried as juveniles instead of adults in the state of Wisconsin. The reason behind this is that he believes that prison does not handle the job of rehabilitating individuals of this age and that juvenile correction centers would be the better fit. This is where things get tricky and videogames gets thrown into the fray. Erpenbach believes that there needs to be extra funding for state juvenile centers if 17-year olds are no longer tried as adults. Because videogames tend to be the scapegoat these days, he suggests that an extra 1% be added videogames to help fund juvenile centers.
Now this is where it gets comical. Michael Gallagher of the ESA commented that this is unfair to equate all juvenile crimes with videogames as the “discriminatory tax” will create a bad aura around the videogame industry. Erpenbach came back to say that he agrees with Gallagher, but the only reason he is proposing the extra 1% tax on videogames is because he could not find a better source for the situation. Yes, Erpenbach is really highlighting his political tidiness with this one. On the other hand, Wendy Henderson of the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families supports this idea as she believes videogames makes wasted use of teenager’s time.
Yes, politics is a wonderful thing.

wtf feel bad for that state
Screw them, 60 is high already. If that 1% were going to developers then that would be a different story (with the rise of videogame costs it would be understandable).
"but the only reason he is proposing the extra 1% tax on videogames is because he could not find a better source for the situation"
Pull the money outta your pocket you greedy bastard, knows dam well that money wouldn't go no where near the juvenile center
"Videogames [make] wasted use of [a] teenager's time." What kind of line is that? Videogames are keeping kids off the streets if anything. When a kid is playing halo or half life or metal gear or mario or the sims, are they out using drugs on a random street corner with some gang? Videogames keep kids busy by giving them something to do, albiet no very constructive (as of the past). But atleast it keeps them in an area where they can be monitored, as long as they are playing a console and not a portable device.
Video games are the new cigarettes.
Tax? BOOO!!! BOOO!!!!!
what a james blunt !
why do ploiticians need to give videos games a bad image? are gamers that evil? i'm surely not but i'll bet that ben-laden never played video games in his life and look what he did.
Thats right you damn Congressmen Tax us more so you can waiste more of our money for new houses and bonus for yourself's damn you.
Video games waste time? And all those stupid sites teens use like Facebook doesn't? Here's an idea. Make marijuana legal and tax that. Makes perfect sense...
I would march on Washington if they put this in effect. I give the govt enough of my money, they ain't gettin more!
This isn't going to effect anyone outside of Wisconsin, unless the rest of the states do the same thing.
I used to work in a Juvenile Detention Center before and let me tell you these type of kids are mess because of their parents. some, not all I believe some of these kids need to get their head pushed in if you know if you know what I mean. When I was growning up let me even look at my mom the wrong way and I'll be looking out the back of my head for a week. Parents who blame video games need to look at themselves in the mirror and ask what are they doing wrong cause play GTA is not going to make me go out there and shoot up the place.
Wow,ppl move away from piracy for this?Bring on the torrents then.
just another way to get more money from us gamers.
psn id: gingo.... thats about the most stupid thing i've ever read, at least it wont affect me but we get charged far too much for games already as it is
f@@ggs
Pfft dirty taxy? No taxation without gamer representation.
screw that, the 50 to 60 jump was enough to stop 30% of my buying, anymore and i'd be happy to have 2 games a year! Glad i dont live in wisonsin! :)
