EA rejects collaboration with Jack Thompson

Posted on March 6th, 2008 at 07:06 EDT

Jack Thompson has been a highly critical opponent to the growth of the videogames industry. Thompson is even more of a adversary to publisher Take-Two Interactive, whom he fought against in court in the past regarding a child shooting his family and placing the blame on Grand Theft Auto, a Take-Two property. With the recent reports of EA going after Take-Two in a possible acquisition deal, Thompson believes that if any deal were to happen, EA could potentially clean them up.

"I am delighted to work with Electronic Arts to evict the Zelnick Trojan Horse from within Take-Two's corporate walls. In doing so, I can get the new Take-Two into the clear as to the trouble I and others can send its way.

"Zelnick is the source of trouble headed Take-Two's way, not I. And EA can make the case, with my help, so that such trouble can be avoided." states Thompson in a letter days ago.

Despite this somewhat courteous appeal, Electronic Arts has gone on record to state that it does not want to have any dealings with the attorney, citing that because of his past criticisms of the industry, it would make any future partnership between the two “impossible”.

Electronic Art’s Mariam Sughayer explains:

"In response to your offer to assist in the proposed acquisition of Take-Two, we would strongly prefer that you not get involved in this matter.

"EA is a strong supporter of creative freedom for game developers. We feel that your past statements - including false claims about content in our games - make any collaboration with you impossible."

Many would not blame EA for their decision to shoot down Jack Thompson. What it seems like is as if Thompson is trying to make EA an “offer they cant refuse” in some sort of “protection act” in the idea that if EA allows him to work together, he will not harass them in the future.

Either way, it is hard to trust an attorney who has been nothing but blight upon the industry for years now. With EA being the top dog in the industry, they are not allowing any of that.

This is very good news that EA decided not to collaborate with Thompson. Had EA agreed we could have seen the end of the GTA franchise. Thompson said he would like to "clean up" Take-Two more or less... how do you clean up GTA without completely destroying the game play. Jack Thompson can die.
