Does dust in your PS3 void the warranty?

Posted on November 12th, 2007 at 12:13 EDT

Lets get straight to the point; at USD 599 (early 60GB price) or USD 399 (current 40GB price) the PlayStation 3 is some pretty expensive hardware. The last thing you would want to happen is something terribly wrong which cannot be repaired. Furthermore, if something shall happen to your PS3, you would want to be in the insurance that it is covered by a warranty.

With that being said, one of the more common questions is that of dust voiding the warranty. Things that can void the warranty include neglecting to maintain your PS3 in top form, but what about dust accumulating inside your PS3? Does that count as neglect? Well during a recent phone conversation with a Sony CSR, an individual named Ive asked this very question. The transcript points out the details:

Ive: I'm calling just to pretty much clarify the PS3's warranty, if there's any clause in the warranty that makes it so that if the PS3 is too dusty that the warranty is void.

CSR: No.

Ive: No?

CSR: No. The only way that it, um, voided is if it was neglected, um, abused, dropped or anything like, modificated like if you opened it up, modification, if you didn't have your receipt, um, any power failures like mother nature or anything like that then that actually does void the warranty. Other than that any defective PS3s or anything like that is still, um, still under the warranty.

While that conversation does clarify that a dusty PS3 does not contribute to a voided warranty, which does not mean any chances should be taken. To avoid being screwed over, you would want to make sure that your great investment is always in great shape.

Continuously clean it during spare time to avoid dust collating inside. While this conversation pointed out that dust would not void the warranty, we advise you to take necessary precautious just in case.

wtf, really!?  I think that is pretty lame....I mean, sure you can buy that compressed air and try to blow the dust out from inside....but still, dust is going to build up sometimes....especially with the amazing dust magnet that is the PS3.

....... hmmm....theres alot of "ums" in csr's sentences arent there.....anyway dust will get on youre ps3 wether you like it or not it simply trikles down on to the top of it from the air and as for cleaning the dust out of it i use the vacuum, i unplug everything on it take off the hard disk drive cover and vacuum out the front back and the left and right side vents as well as where the hard disk is stored and it looks much better and no it didn't damage it, it actually ran better, besides i cant think of any other way to get all the dust out of it especially wats built up on the inside, can you?

PSU is becoming worse and worse with their "news".  You're crying that your petty $600 console is not covered for dust, yet in every other aspect of the CE world dust is not covered either.  How about those $XXXX dollar HDTV's everyone is buying up... oh, guess what, THOSE ARENT COVERED FOR DUST DAMAGE EITHER!  There are places like bestbuy that might cover those kinds of damage but you will be paying extra for those coverages.

Plus, if you can not understand the side of the manufacturers you are simply being thick-headed anyway... If you don't clean your electronics regularly what kind of person are you? (a very dirty one I would imagine).  I for one working in the CE and retail world understand both sides of the arguement here, but I really don't understand why people cry about it like 3 yr old babies. If you are not proactive enough in taking preventative measures, then maybe you don't deserve your o so precious console.

RE: Badz_ps3

The story isnt about what you seem to think it is. It was confirmation that dust DOES NOT void your warrenty. Neglect does. If the thread in the forum is even remotely true the guy in it had purposefully put his system in a place that would cause huge amounts of dust to collect. it was in fact (if true) his own damn fault. THAT would be neglect. but if you;re a sane person that places it in a reasonable position that dosent get too dusty and you occasionally blow the dust out of the fan vents then your system is fine.

As for the CSR's "umm"s in the transcript it's not like these people are required to take a public speaking course, half the time they read this crap off a script so if they're stumbling on a question that the script dosent cover then they're just naturally stuttering, nothing out of the ordinary with that.

One year warranty is pretty lame - my TV has 5 years even my cheap DVD player came with 3 years next day replacement... My PC came with 3 years with first year onsite. Whats with the stingy 1 year anyway?

Yes a vacuum is best but there is no way your getting the dust out of a computer or ps3 with a vacuum without opening it up. I say blow the bleep out of it and and at least if it fails they can't tell you it was due to neglect or dust. Personally my PS3 runs 24/7 folding and about every 3 months I hear the fan running at a higher speed than normal so I take it out and blow the bleep out of it. You wouldn't believe how much dust it has in it and this is in a clean house and it's kept on an entertainment center. I've been using compressed air for 15 year to clean out computers and electronics and have never had a failure resulting from it.
