Blu-ray a necessity, says Killzone 2 developer

Posted on October 16th, 2007 at 04:43 EDT

GamePro recently had the opportunity to speak with Steven Ter Heide, Producer of Killzone 2. During their interview, some new details have emerged on the gameplay and even a little was unveiled about the storyline.
Gameplay will have strong ties with environmental conditions, with certain weapons being controlled by various natural events. One example of this is the ARC weapon that has been shown in a demo, which is powered by lightning.

Players will be allowed to jump for the first time in the series, adding a large gameplay mechanic. Leaning and peeking were also mentioned, along with contextual actions throughout the game.

During the interview, Ter Heide mentioned that Blu-ray was not a luxury, but a necessity in a game like Killzone 2, which features levels in excess of 2gb of data.

Multiplayer details were not given, however, it was announced that the game would link up to Killzone.com and the PlayStation Home Network. Presumably, there will also be stat tracking and possible clan support. More on multiplayer to come.

Be sure to check back for further details as they become available.

I guess size does matter, and someone tried to convince us that all that space on blue-ray disks would not be important for game developers, I would like someone from the other side to comment on that!

So more and more game developers realize that Blu-ray Disc is a vastly superior game media... Good!

it's been long since size = more quality, BR discs just enforce that, for some it may seem like a waste for others it may just be what they need to give to gamers what they want in terms of gaming experience.

I like BueRay but come on guys this statement isn't true.  Lets say it shipped on 4 DVDs.  You could then be required to install it on a hard drive, even the 20GB version of the PS3 would handle it.  The game engine and probably two levels would fit on the main DVD while the rest could be loaded on the HD.  Probably using around 10GB of storage.

Would it be as practical?  No, but it isn't required.

The announcement of a confirmed release date would be nice to hear! But do make an allowance of 6-8 months delay after the official release date! ;) It's been over 2 years since we've seen a trailer of this awesome game, how long do we need to wait to actually play in our Home?

@ FatherOfOne.

I'm not going to say that what you proposed isn't possible, but like you said, it is highly impractical. Now we now it will never happen with the PS3, since we have 100GB discs and we can even go higher than that in the future. But let's look at it this way. If a developer for the 360 wanted to do something like that, they wouldn't be able to because of all the people that own the CORE version. I don't think any company would do that and screw over a big chunk of their consumers so blatantly. So basically, soon enough, 360 owners are going to be screwed.

This news is extremely old -.-

I think 2 or 3 months ago it was already mentioned that blu-ray is vital for Killzone 2 and PS3 games in general, but who didn't knew that right from the beginning of PS3-era

Nothing really new in here. PSU keep it fresh with your news...

Do you know exactly how their engine works? What if the engine and the entire game is based off of streaming assets? If it is then it would not be ok and who in their right mind would want to lose the majority of their hard drive space for one game?

I really wish the skeptics would pay more attention to the technical side of things.

@Father
I filled my 60gb and had to replace it with a 160gb hdd. Installing PC game on a PC is OK due to the size of the install but who wants to install 4 dvds worth and use up 20gigs of their hdd space? Highly inpractical and nobody would want it. And it becomes a problem when you want to take the game round to a mates house.
The devs choose to squeeze as much as they can to fit on a DvD 9 on 360 and probably cut some out making the game shorter. The devs could easily use 2 DvD's and have more uncompressed data but they know gamers don't want a 2nd disc, and besides that is will cost more to manufacture each product due to the 2nd disc.

Blu-ray was always going to come and replace DvD, DvD's can't be around forever and one day something will replace blu-ray. The need for storage space increases every year, 100gb blu-rays will be needed earlier than you know it.

I believe every 1st party dev to Sony when they say blu-ray is a necessity, I would like to hear 3rd part's say that they're fed up with DvD 9's and that blu-ray is their saviour.

No new news but gets me PSYCHED about this game. And about the DVD...Think about it this way. 4 DVDs pisses gamers off. But if a developer WOULD do it, that would STILL would have almost 17 Gb less than a Blu Ray. This is just not possible without Blu Ray. Now, what if we decide to go multi discing blu ray. That sounds so lovely. Just 2 Blu Ray discs. SO MUCH DATA STORAGE.

You know i really don't think KZ2 devs should be hyping the 2gb excess thing, because no matter how impressive, ppl WILL start complaing and moaning for something else.So just keep the development quiet and blow EVERYONE away like they did at E3 2007.

Nice info, but anyone with half a brain can see KZ2 would need a Blu-ray disc.  Unless we planned on getting 4 levels at 2GBs each to fit on a DVD.
