Blacksite: Area 51 manager talks PS3 version

Posted on November 30th, 2007 at 04:44 EDT

While the PlayStation 3 version of Blacksite: Area 51 is still some way off, it has not stopped it from appearing in the news.

In an attempt to be open with the consumers and industry, Harvey Smith, the creative director for Blacksite, has described the development cycle as “so F***ed up”.

"With a year to go, the game was disastrously off rails", said Harvey Smith. He even went as far as giving his stance on the whole project by saying that he, "wasn't excited about this Area 51 game".

Wow, harsh words coming from the creative director, but that isn’t it, there is more:

"Everyone was forced to share tech. It took eight months to get one thing working"

Furthermore, he even had the nerve to review his own game, by giving it an outstanding 80% but still gives some props to the game saying that it is a good title that sets itself apart from most games.

When asked why he is so bluntly honest about the game’s problems, he commented, "I believe in personal accountability".

Blacksite: Area 51 for the PS3 will be released early December with a European date coming in early 2008.

Cancel the game, cut your losses and move on. Smartest thing you can do because after all the bad press you will need more than a miracle to salvage this game. Sad but true.

me being a big fps fan i was really looking foward to getting this game, but with these comments i hope a demo comes out on psn to see if it's worth buying, don't forget, it's the season for miracles, lol!

It sounded so promising as well. But I lost interest when I heard about the gimped online compared to the 360 version.

I have to agree with tom - cancel it and cut your losses. Better to do that than release a game that you know no PS3 owner in their right mind is going to buy.

He never said the game wasn't going to be good, he just said that development was difficult.  The game could still turn out to be a decent shooter.

I'm the same as Paranoimia, as soon as I heard that the netplay for the PS3 version was gonna be naff I crossed it off my list of games to buy. We dont need anoher FPS game anyway, what with Reistance, COD4, Haze, Unreal and Killzone 2.

Now this is what I like to hear, some honesty for a change!  Maybe this helps explains the development problems with the PS3 games, it's bad management (lol).

I was even excited about this game in the first place. Now with those comments he just confirmed my aggressive reasoning, thanks dude. Next time use some foresite and know when it's time to scrap a project and due what managers due, MANAGE. Sheesh didn't mean to go on a semi rant...

I don't know about him, but saying all the negatives upfront and then giving it an unimaginably high score off bat will give off mixed and most likely negative assumptions to those attempting to purchase it.

I think, even though there is negative feedback from some one that high up in the developed-team-chain, I have to give him props for being honest.  I wouldn't want to hear a bunch of hype about a game and then be discouraged anyways.  In the very least, now none of us have to expect something completely extra-ordinary, but rather something decent that 'could' entertaine in the mean time :) just being optimistic

As much as I disrespect developers making bad games, at least he's honest about it.

Thanks gingo, after reading your comment i went to see the review on gametrailers and frankly, after seeing that, I will deffinately not be buying this game because they're never be ables to fix all thier s**t before the game hits the stores. Sad really, this could of been a very good game, it had potential but just had the wrong people for the script and basically for most of the reste of the game too. sniff!!!!
