At World's End sells 160k in debut week

Posted on December 13th, 2007 at 05:30 EDT

Walt Disney Pictures Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End has sold an estimated 160,000 copies in its first week on sale.

The title has now taken the crown for fastest selling Blu-ray title in its debut week, surpassing Spider-Man 3, which sold 130,000 in its first week earlier this year.

Teen comedy Superbad also exhibited strong sales following its debut exclusively on Blu-ray last week, coming in second place.

Exact sales numbers have yet to be revealed, however.

@D3

I'm with you on Predator and Alien trilogy on blu-ray.

So HD-DVD camp had one big film on their media for this year and that's only because icrosoft gave Paramount money for exclusitivity. Blu-ray has quite a few big movies this year and if Transformers had come out on blu-ray instead, it would have seen bigger numbers. Hey Paramount, was it really worth it?

Let's put than figure into perspective. In the same period more than 1,500,000 Pirates of the Caribbean DVD's where sold. Even little Harry Potter managed to eek out 500,000 DVD sales in the first 8 hours of release... 160K is a pretty pisspoor number

Most telling is a BBC program reporting that Pirates has been pirated more than 70 million times since the movie was released. It also appears that of these Low Def is more popular than HD or standard definintion as people download more low capacity copies of movies to watch on their Laptop, PDA or mobile phone. According to Gartner digital downloads on mobile phones alone is forecasted to be worth more than five times more revenue than both HD formats combined...

While on the subject of so called "HD" - we really should change the name as both camera's and screen technologies have already been released that run at 4096 x 2400 pixels at 30 frames per second which is more than four times higher resolution than 1080p... So HD-DVD and Bluray 1080p should be regarded as only being "Medium Definition" technologies... Maybe Bluray & HD-DVD will end up as very temporary formats? After all, Japans Public Television Broadcaster NHK has recently announced plans to move transmissions to Super Hi-Vision (SHV) standard (4,320 horizontal and 7,680 vertical lines) by 2012. The transmission of this high resolution will be done over Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing equipment being roled out across the PSTN network. This would allow you to stream movies over the net at 24 Gigabits per second - IE: a Bluray disk in around 30 seconds allowing for latency.

The net will allow for this sort of bandwidth within the next 5 years as the telco's scale 10 Gig transponders - the challenge is that substations with cached data stores of digital content must be built in a grid spaced at 260Km. For this reason those of us living in major cities will get this sort of bandwidth sooner than you think. But those living in isolated area's will have to make do with portable media like Bluray for a bit longer.

Bottom line - you would not want to waste to much cash on either HD-DVD or Bluray. Save your hard earned money and invest it. Use the proceeds to pay for more bandwidth and fast reliable data storage. The world is changing very fast - stay with it.
