Speaking at an earnings call with investors this week, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick announced plans to release a sixth instalment in the critically acclaimed Call of Duty franchise for 2009.

Although little is known on the project, Kotick stated that the game would follow the series “leapfrog studio strategy”, implying that development duties may shift from Treyarch (Call of Duty 5: World at War) to Infinity Ward (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare)

“As we look ahead to calendar 2009, even though it is early, the slate is strong,” he commented.

“Our lineup will be anchored by: multiple new Guitar Hero SKUs; an all-new Call of Duty, utilizing our leapfrog studio strategy; and a completely reinvented Tony Hawk. In addition, we will launch Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 and we will have a number of movie titles, including Marvel’s Wolverine, Transformers 2, DreamWorks’ Monsters versus Aliens, and 20th Century Fox’s Ice Age.”

Stay tuned for more developments as they break.

Two Call of Duty games in one year?  You think they're just covering their bets?  You know, in case it's proven that gamers really don't appreciate the WWII setting anymore, they have an IW game in the chute?  I think that's smart if that's the case.

    @3

Thanks for the correction.  Are you guys gonna get COD5?  I must admit,  the trailer made the story mode look very interesting.  Though, like most, I'm not into the WWII thing.

cod5 wont suk. the reason cod3 sukd was cuz Treyarch had to make seperate engine for 5consoles from scratch, had only 10 months to develop the games, and COD3 was a launch game for PS3 and Wii. giv Treyarch a chance guys. this game will not suk!

I'm not sure what to think. It sounds like the money got to them and now theyre only taking a year of time to come out with C.O.D every year. Who knows yet.

Still going to buy it ofcourse

You guys go ahead and waste your money on this crap. Activision sitting here putting out a game every year for all you morons to buy at $60 a pop. Im sorry but i had my fill will COD:4 and with Infinity Ward not giving a crap about the problems they had with that game. They made their quick money on the game sales and didnt give a damn about the issues with the game. Instead of worrying about the problems with COD:4 gettting fixed, they put out a mappack to get more of  your money. I traded that dogcrap in a long time ago when i couldn't even finish one game without the host leaving the game or getting disconnected and i dont regret getting rid of it one bit. The COD series on the PS3 is gonna lose fans anyways when SOCOM comes out and then next year with MAG. 256 players!!! Yeah COD can suck my nutz.

Stupid morons. Go ahead and waste your money on these thrown together games they are gonna put out every year. I still have the bad taste in my mouth from COD:4 and Infinity Ward treating the PS3 like crap. They were more worried about putting out mappacks to get more of your money than fixing the issues they had with COD:4. Activision and Infinity Ward care about nothing but money. They have crappy support and i for one wont buy another COD game EVER!!!

JUST ANNOUCED: COD:7 COMING IN 2010!!!!!! LOL *UCKING IDIOTS

I think its goin to be a rush job on these two games. Why would you release 5&6 close together? I wonder if they are running out of ideas, or, just trying to meet a certain quota for there yearly earnings. We will have to see if they are worth the rush. PSN ID-Demented007

@coastner04, I think you made your feelings quite clear, you didn't have to post them twice. Ok I agree with you, the online play hasn't been great, but hasn't been that bad either. Don't you think they may resolve these issues for the next installment?

  21. PROTOTYPE

    • 1:12pm BST - August 8th, 2008

COD 6 will have had 2 years of dev time by the end of '09 so I don't think it will be a rush job. Remember the guys doing 5 aren't doing 6 so I would presume 6 is already in production.

@20. Ok yeah i give you that. I did have a couple of fun nights playing COD:4 but the problems eventually pissed me off and turned me off the game. YES they might fix the problems before the next one but im not paying them another $60 for it just to see if they did. Im sorry but screw me once shame on them, but the screw me twice shame on me aint happening.

Also sorry for posting that twice. Something happened when i went to post the first one and i didnt see it on the page so i wrote another post.

call of duty 5 looks pretty good (the trailer) but im sure it wont stand a chance agianst CoD4

whats kind of stupid  is why they are planning stuff for CoD6 now

why dont they just focus on CoD5 for now and work on cod6 later

If IW do it, its a day one buy, but if its Treyarch, you can forget it.  After the all ghillied up level on COD4, IW would own at vietnam and guerilla warfare. I hope its 'nam, or africa (sierra leone etc...)

It should be good. For all those who are saying its rushed, its not. If its IW, they've not been doing owt, since COD4, so it'll already be in development. Two different devs is not the same as releasing the same game each year, also known as the EA policy.

All of you worrying about two COD games coming out so close should realize that they are two very different games made by two different developers.  Just Because it says Call of Duty on the box doesn't mean its the same type of game.

You people sure do use the word idiot a lot.  Especially the ones that don't get that Tetryarch OR Infinity Ward works on the games for TWO YEARS, not ONE YEAR.  If they flip-flop, then they get 2 years of development a piece.
