A look into the world of Iron Man

Posted on April 30th, 2008 at 21:13 EDT

We’ve all been there as kids, sitting in the backyard, wondering what it would be like to be a superhero. Then we were introduced to video games, the one platform where the average Joe save the world. Set to release on May 2 is SEGAs upcoming superhero title, Iron Man. Iron Man will release simultaneously with its movie counterpart and thus, as expected, the game follows the same storyline as the film.

Designed by Secret Level (Golden Axe), Iron Man will have you take flight throughout the majority of the game while doing battle with several staple Iron Man opponents. You’ll find yourself squaring off against Advanced Idea Mechanics, the Maggia (a high-tech mafia analogue), The Melter, Titanium Man and the infamous Iron Monger. Not only will you be waging war with these baddies, but you’ll also be going up against tanks, fighter jets, and ground troops. While the majority of the game has you flying around blasting people from above, there will be a significant portion dedicated to ground warfare where you’re forced to bring down several tanks and infantry personnel.

One of the unique aspects of the game is the ability to upgrade your suit to your liking. You won’t have to just have a standard suit progression as you’ll be able to upgrade specific areas in order to customize your fighting style. Whether you’re looking for harder hits, upgraded blasters or even faster flying, the upgrade system has you covered. Each enhancement will come with three levels of possibilities, each one stronger than the last. You’re able to afford these upgrades by money allotted to your character after each mission. Though it is kind of odd that the playboy millionaire can’t afford this himself, it does give you incentive to play through the missions at your highest capabilities.

Iron Man will also feature voices from the acclaimed film, so look forward to hearing Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard and Shaun Toub shouting away on-screen. This is one of the more complete aspects of the title, considering it isn’t an everyday occurrence that the on-screen voices will sign on to take part in the video game - just look at Matt Damon and the Bourne title set for release later this year.

Whether you’re planning on checking out the movie or to hitting up your local Blockbuster to test out the game, you’ll definitely get your desired dose of Iron Man come May 2.

I'm not wasting $59.99 on Iron Man, but I do want to see the movie. I've always liked the Marvel movies.
